PCB Components and Boards

I mentioned I had a pick up with a guy who has been working on computers for almost 40 years and he gave me a bunch of incomplete towers earlier and he said he would call me back for a bunch of stuff in his basement. I'm supposed to go back tonight.

Is there anything I should watch out for specifically? Is there anything anyone here would be interested in? It's supposed to be bins of capacitors, resistors and all the other stuff you would need to make your own PCB. I have no idea how much of anything there will be but I figured any input before I go can't hurt. I'm not too familiar with making PCBs, only unmaking them>:)

Tantalum,dip switches, to5 resistors? with gold legs, any ic packages with gold legs and gold plates. Purple and white ic's and eproms will have gold legs. Look for anything marked Mostek and old motorola packages. If he has 40 year old components you nay be looking at quit a find. Keep us posted.
Also anytype of old tv type glass tubes. Some are worth some good money.

to5 resistors - That's transistors, If this is new packaging and not take out components then there is a few companies that buy up in bulk for resale. We had one or two post on here about buying components but they have to be new and not used.

" On the left in the photo are an 8-pin and a 14-pin Dual Inline Package, DIP. The DIP comes in 6, 8, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 28, and 40-pin versions. The 24-pin and higher are twice the width of the smaller ones. Digital ICs, except for microprocessors, and analog devices, except for high input impedance amplifiers, come in DIPs. Military grade and wide temperature range industrial grade devices do not come in this plastic package."

Next is the TO-5 package. Some of the best known early transistors, such as the 2N404 and 2N1302 came in this package. Premium quality ICs also come in the TO-5 configuration with 8, 10, or 12 pins, depending on the application.

Next is the ubiquitous TO-92 package. It is very inexpensive to manufacture and the low cost transistors in this package were, in part, responsible for the transistor boom of the 70s. 3-terminal voltage regulators are also sold in this package. They are limited to 3 pins.

Lastly is the almost as ubiquitous TO-220. Power transistors up to 50 watts and IC voltage regulators come in this package. It is sometimes seen with 4 or 5 pins. "

I get slightly excited when I see curious electronic items and circuits.

I have seen the pictures of the server boards and they are beautiful ART for sure. A shame to scrap some of it.

Thanks for the info guys, it turned out to be more of a garage clean out this time but he said he has lots more stuff in his basement still. I still made out quite well, honestly my only complaint probably sounds like whining (he wouldn't give me his brass knuckles, because they're "illegal", ugh! he said he was going to cut them up:()

I doubled my finger card collection in one shot (and I know I saw some TA caps!) and got so much aluminum and a good bit of copper. Plus there was a whole whack of wire, nuts/bolts, lots of stuff I probably won't scrap.

And I'm going back tonight, he just messaged me, can't wait to see what's there today! I'm bringing him a coffee and gift card for more coffee, it's the least I can do!

Well I'm pretty sure I have one of everything now! Because my client used to! And I'm still supposed to go back this week. I think I have about 10 TA caps now (I'm not even sure they are TA, they had "+" on them) too much stuff to list and I'm not even sure what half of it is. I will honestly try to take some pics but I just spent my whole weekend sorting the stuff and cleaning my garage to make room for it.

When I was there last night the client told me "Now we're getting to the good stuff!" Sweet! I came home with an Radio Shack Portable Computer and an Oscilliscope CRT. Both look like they will go on Ebay eventually. He also gave me a monitor that is from a hospital (IBM I think) that he said he had been using in his own home set up.
