Unique find in a clean out...

Just wanted to share and possibly get an opinion or 2! I did a massive 2 floor clean out the other day in an old building aside of lots of steel etc and all the wonderful stuff that is in most buildings, tucked in a closet (let me rephrase that) a closet was built around a SAFE....yup and its a big one! estimating the weight at 1200-1500 pounds, its from approximately 1833 and if nothing else it has magnificent eye appeal. I intend on having it opened, was just wondering if anyone else has dealt with larger safes in buildings. By the way, all the contents of the 2 floors were FREE...So a good day in my world!

Sounds like a keeper. Most scrapyards dont buy safes unless cut in half to show there's no cement content in the walls, and there could be so contact your yard before hauling that monster in. Good luck I'd love to see pics

DO NOT SCRAP THE SAFE! These older safes have a good collector market and also they are great for the house. Pay the money to have it opened DO NOT DRILL IT! There is a safe in a historic church Here in richmond that I have my eye on for 2 years no way to get it right now but hopefully when they do the renovations there will be enough space to get it out of the basement with a crane. I would be trying to figure out a way to get your safe out. Any manufacture marks or serial numbers or any pictures?

You may want to read bout Mr Gaylers safes in this linq. You may have a nice piec of history on your hands!!! Good luck and keep us updated on your progress with this. Looks like that safe may date back as far as 1833!!!

What are the dimensions? If you are in southern Cal. I can give you a name of a key company. They are much more than a key company, more like a security company. They do just about everything related to security, locks and keys. Also safes, including moving, selling and opening locked safes. A family business with more than 50 years and "TONS" OF EXPERIENCE. I know they do business in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and parts of Orange counties. Need or want their info. give me a PM and I will get it to you. Good luck with your safe, I think you have a keeper or some real $$$$.

This! Do not destroy the safe. As is, as a 1200lb safe you are looking at $1,000+ just as a usable safe.

Just for the record, I will give you 20 cents a pound for scrap prior to you opening it.
