Uses for drained compressor oil

Naturally I drain the oil out of refrigerator and freezer compressors before I cut them open to get the windings from the electric motor inside. Mostly I have put it into a 5 gallon bucket with a screw lid, and when it is about full I take it to the transfer station in town to dump it in the big oil recycling tank. Lately I have thought, I wonder if there is any other uses for this oil, and have come up with a few. Below is a few I use, please feel free to add your ideas. Might help folks get use out of the oil they remove.

Use as bar oil in a chain saw

"Paint" the wood floor on a flatbed trailer, help preserve the wood to keep it from cracking and drying so fast

"Paint" the wood on horse stalls to keep the horse from cribbing (tastes nasty to them)


Any other ideas???

after reading through some old threads I no longer put the oil in my smoker. Something about poisonous gas when it is burned from a small amount of refrigerant still trapped in the oil.

cleaner? lubricant? jack fluid? I don't know what the stuff's made out of tbh.

Chain lube on the chainsaw. It will also work on a shed floor to discourage termites and other creepy crawlies.

As I recall there is a recycle market for that oil. Read the old threads on freon. Also I think the companies that buy the recovered freon also buys the oil. Mike

I sell my used compressor oil to an outfit that makes bio-diesel. They say it makes a great fuel when mixed 50/50 with kerosene.

Isn't it just mostly mineral oil. Or maybe that was R12, not sure about r134. Im only 16 so maybe someone "More experienced" that has seen the days of r12.

I found the EPA stats on it. tried to copy it for here but lost it and now cant find it .

older then 2000 out door appliance oil may contain some ammonia. window a/c refrigerates, freezers contain some stuff not good and could have some freon or mercury in them. not good.

Most of the compressor oils you will run into will either be mineral, POE (polyol ester) or alkybenzene.

I have a deal going with a shop that services and repairs appliances, they were selling there sealed units unprocessed. In exchange for helping them with a dumpster problem, I now get their old sealed units.

My problem how to properly dispose of cooling oils, as I think (not sure) they disposed of it at city yard as used mixed motor oil (not good).

I have been using it to clean hand tools, cutting & tapping oil, preserving wood handled tools (shovels, picks, axes) and bottom of lawn mower decks (keeps and prevents grass/grime buildup).

Still can't use all oil! can it be sold?

Build a waste oil burner and use it to heat your shop, your home, your water or melt the ally off scrap steel to make seperation easier. :0)
The temp in the burner will mean that any nasties, and there aren't than many of them, will be destroyed and rendered harmless. They actualy burn Refrigerant gasses to dispose of them these days.

Another use I just remembered while putting away some better than scrap stuff, was to store bearings.

I wouldn't put that in my bar and chain oil tank on my chainsaw. viscosity seems lower when u mix it all, plus there is all different types.

I would not use it in the tank, just figured it might be ok for bar oil. Mine mainly gets used to treat the wood of the floor of my 16ft flatbed trailer. Does miracles in keeping the wood from drying out so fast.

IMO chainsaws don't care what oil they get as long as they get plenty of it. Viscosity is good but not necessary just means more tank filling.
yes pi#$ing oil all over is not good, but this is just an observation I have made/tested.

It does work good on sealing wood! Rally good for your wooded handled tools!
