When scrapping a laptop.

Ok, so when you are breaking down a laptop, there are many boards in there. From the motherboard to the little one for the camera in the lid. I even take out the board behind the touch pad. I was wondering how one would sort these boards. Also there are little flat ribbon cables I guess you can say that connect thing to the board. They usually have a blue pull tab. Are these silver?

As I understand it so far as a new e-scrapper

High Grade boards

• Motherboard
• HDD logic board
• CD/DVD board

Low Grade boards

• USB (if not connected directly to the MOBO)
• Board under the screen (after the fascia of the LCD has been removed)
• any boards that buttons push like power button, right and left click etc.
• Board for touch pad (though it looks as if it has a lot of gold on it).

Silver

• Keyboard velums
• ribbon cables.

Do I have this right?

It all depends on your buyer...
Motherboards are usually in their own category
Same with logic boards and CD/DVD boards

My buyer buys usb boards as "high" grade board (non-motherboard)
LCD screen board: "high" grade
push button board: "low-mid" grade
touchpad board: "high" grade

Thanks Mr. Entrepreneur. Looks like I have more sorting to do. I wonder if I could get a good price minus shipping from your buyer. My local scrap yard buy MOBOs at, wait for it..........................$0.60 a pound. Not a joke. I went by there today to drop off some towers that I had scrapped out already and asked while i was there. $0.07 for steel price on the towers.

Are Laptop motherboards graded differently from tower motherboards?

In the past I have been getting large socket mobo pricing but this like many of these type of questions depends on your buyer. Mike

its funny cause I buy mobos here for that price as theres nothing around here that people can go to and when I offered hire prices people would look around loose money on shipping or other things like distance to our nearest actual buyers and not want to do that and then argue with me over it so I as a silly thing went with 60clb and it just keeps going

I stopped breaking down laptops about 6 months ago. I pull the battery, RAM and hard drive and get more for the rest than I would if I spent the frustrating time to break it down.

...by selling "the rest" where? Ebay, buyer, local, etc. if you don't mind sharing?

I do the same thing as Parrothead does. Pull the valuables, and send the rest in. Here's some current prices:

With depressed prices, .60/lb isn't bad when not paying shipping charges..

If you have a non cracked screen, in GENERAL it probably works...those can be sold on EBAY as a parts machine. You just have to be careful and not have torn the connectors to the video card. I ALWAYS check on Ebay 1st to see what the machine sells as a parts machine...many times I don't even touch them and sell that directly that way. I do pull battery. Many times it will be worth FAR more than the scrap prices you will get. Basically if a scrap machine is selling for $10-15 and up...sell on Ebay and don't even touch it...you are getting more $$$ there.

EDIT: Let me clarify....CERTAINLY if it is a NEWER laptop and is not missing much if anything you MIGHT do better locally for resale. Scrap is the last place for it, parts machine on Ebay next up the list and then resale (locally in general).

About the board for the touch pads on laptops, they have a nice Gold plating on most of them.
I don't get many so I put them aside seperate.

But often I get boards with Gold plating and not much else on them, the board behind LCD displays on printers and microwaves Is a good example, the thin board behind LCD laptop screens is often another.
I put all of them aside separate, I get the impression every square inch of good Gold plating is 50cents worth of Gold. Though I cannot confirm it.

But the touch pads, they look sooo pretty. They have to have a great use, escrap jewlery billfolds?
