Alright, this may be a stupid question, but I will take the knowledge just so I'm sure.
Is CAT5 networking cable classified as number 2 insulated? Could I throw it in with my power and extension cords, or is it graded lower.

Ask your yard. Each one pays differently. One here pays for 35% insulated, one pays twice that.
We always keep the Cat5/6 separate from the other insulated wire and I get a significantly higher price for it.
Really? I have been sitting on a few hundred pounds of it, because i figured it was worth less than #2 insulated.

Depends on the yard. One yard will pay more for cat 5/6 than power cords, and anothe ryard pays more for powercords than the first yard pays for cat 5/6.
The best thing for people that deal in small amounts of wire (under half ton a month) is get a rough idea on the various ways it CAN be graded, then talk to the non ferrous managers at a few yards to see how they sort it and what their pricing is.
Wire is probably the scrap item that is most commonly mis-graded and randomly priced. It doesnt matter what you call it, it matters what someone will pay you for it.
If you are dealing with thousands of lbs, it opens the door for you to talk to people that don't do walk-ins, or talk to someone at the yard that is higher than a manager/supervisor.
I got $1.10 at my speciality yard this past weekend for Telco wire. This included Cat5E, patch cables, smaller 2 pair telephone wire and telephone wire that would go from a base to a handset.
Take the time to chat with management, and try to be seen by them every time you are there.Quote:

Cat 5 is slightly higher than 50% and should pay better, but most yards want to pay way less.
