I was ticked . I ran cans the other day since we are down to 3 people and they were piling up. Three bags were full of loose razor blades, I'm **** lucky I didn't cut my hands to pieces. Who the hell would even think of doing something like that????? :(
Our yard requires you to empty cans on a sheet of pressed metal and then they are racked into the conveyor chute. Reason: Someone was putting hypodermic needles in their bags and an employee was stabbed. If you make this recommendation to the management, you might get a raise. And by the way who ever did this was not thinking or did not care.
One yard I go to its a pain in the as s as you have to dump your cans into a platform with a mesh bottom and they look at everything before raking it into a bin to get the weight. NA it could have been a contractor doing work and his box of blades went in with the beer cans? Not sure why anyone would mix them in on purpose not even a pound of weight. Did you add them to the steel at your yard?
We have a SS table out back that we are going to put inside soon, the boss isn't happy about this and I know it will be more time consuming but haveing folks empty bags onto a table and putting them into bins will be much safer and it will also weed out bottles, garbage, etc.Quote:

Our yard has a small hopper with a mesh bottom they are dumped in to. There is an elevator connected to it where the operator can pull out the bigger misc. crap. (bottles-wood etc.) It goes up the elevator and drops into a large mesh hopper. The large hopper feeds into a small baler that bales up about 3'x3' bales, which were then stacked till they get a semi load. The scale (digital) is connected to the small hopper. They pull the weight after pulling the trash out.
With it being put into that first hopper they can see exactly whats in it and your standing there while they weigh it, so if there was something dangerous in it, I know they'd escort you off their lot.
Boss man may be annoyed but..it beats one of you guys getting stuck with a needle, or cut, etc. I'd rather deal with longer wait times then workman's comp, or worse someone catching something bad from a used needle/glass/etc.
When I worked retail at one time I did claims for the store. Had to ship back all our returns/defective/damaged goods to a warehouse run by another company. We couldn't send anything with broken glass, or they'd reject the pallet an we'd not get credit. I was curious why an asked about it, an it seems one of their warehouse workers got stuck with a dirty needle. HIV or TB I forget which. Either one isn't good tho.
So yea..safety first. Even if it means a longer wait/processing time.

And to think I used to trash pick for cans when I was very young...no excuse for razor blades in cans.
That's horrifying! Another example of "always wear thick gloves no matter how safe you think it'll be" for me. I like my hands.

Your yard buys cans without opening the bags? I'm sure people throw all kinds of **** in there!, my yard crushes the cans in their machine and into a semi as u sell to them, if you have anything in there they won't buy any of your cans, lots of crackheads trying to fill with dirt and such

I can't put the thought process together here.
If I were to stuff a bag of cans with dead weight. I would at least use something that wouldn't slice the bag (or a workers hands) open exposing my plans...
Can, only hope it was accidental, but my gut tells me this was the "Brilliant" plan.

My local yard has one indoor scale for weighing out copper and the like. Used to the workers weighed the bags and workers took them off to be sorted later. About a month ago they changed policy. Now they weigh the bags, the seller loads and unloads off the scale, and the seller opens bags and pours into a large bin. You have to dump the bags before they give you a scale ticket. Slows it up some, but being a honest scrapper it doesn't bother me much. Gives me a change to talk to the workers and see what is going on in the scrap world locally and see if there is anyway I can change my loads to make their days easier. I could imagine the mentality of junkies and people who just don't care about anything but a higher scale ticket value doing foul things. I watched a guy get verbally tore up for bringing in a bag of cans, with a lot of them still full, mixed in with empty uncrushed cans to up the weight! Apparently it has happened before with this dude... :( As funny as it is to watch someone try to reload a washer stuffed full of bricks back into their truck and be put on a no buy list, it gives all of us a bad image and really ticks me off.
Sick and wrong in so many ways. I agree, it sounds like a devious plan. BUT...your story makes me feel better about my scrapping etiquette. My neighbors just leave bags of cans in my yard and I don't care if they're crushed or not, I dump them out to check for odd things. At my yard, they open the bags right away and send them up the shoot so ALL is visible. It doesn't matter that the scale guy is a hottie, (okay, yeah it does) I just never want to see 8-l as an adult diaper goes by. OR a razor blade, for that matter.

Most yards want then crushes so they know nothing is inside of them, that's smart and low risk. I see people riding into the yard on the weekends when I m there with bikes and 10 bags of cans on the sides and dragging a bunch behind. People are crazy
