Recently a dumpster I had been visiting was yielding well ,my permission Tobe there was
as such , I tested the waters by going during the day and being seen by contractors
The contractors would give me no resistance and that was good enough for me.

Then on a Saturday a 20 foot long 4 foot wide steel and aluminum lamp architecture was there waiting for the pick
after I got it out of dumpster I realized this is a big fish . I had it loaded in truck sticking 12 feet high . I had been playing with this piece for 1/2 hour already

Then a women pulls up says I work security for the building across do you have permission ?
I say yes .contractors allow me , she says then come back Monday , she also says I called the police so if you don't want problems leave now .
I realize my permission is based on a benevolent acceptance of just ignoring the good old scrapper from the GC .
Lacking paper work (on my part) and having this lamp architecture sticking 12 foot high , might not put me in favor during a police interview .

So I had to let the fish go and since Fridays are my only day off I lost out .

I need paper work .

Thank you for sharing the lesson. Losing this piece of scrap is a small price for the future finds that go without problems. Some construction companies want their scrap taken to reduce the dump fees. In our part of the country if a dumpster contains metal, wood, sheet rock combinations, the chances are good the company is willing to give it away because it is not worth their time to separate. Having documentation would make life easier.

I retrieved some nice things from construction dumpsters but I always talk to the GC and get the scrap while the GC is there.

Bet little miss thing got a nice lamp to after you left.

You could also get contact info from the whoever gave you permission. The cops would've called an made sure you had permission.

Anyhow, that sucks. I bet the company she does security for will be thrilled to know she's off site policing someone elses property.

RULE OF UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES ONCE AGAIN APPLY S HERE.
1. security cop is a boring job.

2. job super probably called them.

3. many who call them selves scrappers are undisciplined scavengers, and like the vulture leave the messy bones for some one else to clean up.

4. in today's selfish me me me sue crazy world the construction co is liable if you are injured in a dumpster under their control.

We need to regulate ourselves or some one else will do it. Preserve what few rights we have left.

be a real pro,You must, hard as it may be, talk to the job super first.. Once you do this the dumpsters are yours.

One thing I notice all the time is that contractors & workers are really bad at filling up rubbish skips.

They will just dump something volumeish into the bin, then pile stuff on top of it. That really wastes space.
When I go thru the waste I tend to sort it out and stack it so it fills less space. Once it gets near the top I put in ' hungrey sides' by just slipping flat boards/wooden sheets down the sides to increase the capacity of the skip.

This is something they do appreciate. Just walking past a skip during the day I overhear two workers saying "I hope whoever shifted that stuff last night does it again, they can't pick up the skip today and we have to get rid of that bench and rubbish before the new items arrive tomorrow morning....".
That was a clearout of a retail shop as they were upgrading. I got soo much Ali ex and lighting ballasts & lights from that skip. Lotsa cables too.

But, yeah, ask, do, cleanup & leave it better than when you started.
