The other, scratch test

cleaning compressors today and ran into a couple oddballs, mixed windings in the motors.

This got me thinking.... duhn duhn duhn :)
How could one know if the motor was wound this way before cutting?
Where were the loops of copper located in regards to the Al. Well after some rigorous scratching I found out this.

If you scratch the top of the loop or outside (side closer to the outer case) then you would see Al.

If you scratched the inside of the winding (closest to the rotor) you would see the copper

Thought this might help someone out... keep an eye on the inside ;)

Both pic's the scratch look to be the same color. :-/

Yes they do look the same send them to me NH I'll verify it.

That should clear up any confusion:)

Dadgumit. I've tossed a few alum motors into the shred after hitting the edge with a grinder. Who knows if the inside was copper. Will be on the lookout now. Thanks.

My yard takes aluminum ones as irony aluminum

Total clean winding's came in at a 4 lbs avrg.
50% weight being copper
50% being Al
aluminum having twice the area "on the cut" per standard
I would say around 25% lighter, on average, than solid copper winding's of the same size.

Interesting. I came across my first refer motor that was aluminum the other day. Wish I knew before I cut it open. At least my yard takes them all as one category
