14 aluminum bats in the school dumpster tonight...

I put them in a trash bag to carry them to where my car was parked and they had to weigh 40 pounds all together...when you come across something like that it's such a relief because you know that you are going to be able to make payroll and keep the lights on just a little bit longer in your small business. also found a bunch of metal camping chairs, bits and pieces of track metal, fair amount of cans...got one city marked off the list for trash nite, now if it quits raining I can go unload my car and hit up a neighboring city or two.

with the bats check the names on them.... Might be worth putting up on Craigslist I know that my ex girlfriends father found like a $200 bat at a resale shop 4 like 10 bucks

Probably expired date on them and after that date the school (and the regulatory agency) won't let them be used for official use.
I have seen an older softball bat explode from too much use, it developed cracks till finally the end flew off.
My daughter had a favorite bat we had bought her and one tournament the ref. stopped the game as she came up to bat. He inspected the bat and told her to get a different one as that one was outlawed. Come to find out it had an expired date.

The school system probably had to purge them and had bought new ones the first of the season.
There ok to practice with but just no "official" use.

Some of that come from raising children, and seen a lot of this world. Some is like my dad used to say " Jack of all trades and a master of none".

I've done a lot with my few years on earth.

Could also be that the official agency might have changed the rules and outlawed all their old bats.

I checked the bats out just now...and a lot of them are louisville sluggers that are brand new with the shrink wrap and price tags still on them. Tax dollars hard at work...lol at the anti-scrappers and what they would think if they knew that their tax dollars were ending up in my pocket in such a way. What's really funny is this school saves all of their aluminum cans and has also recently started saving food cans from the cafeteria. Oh well, I guess I can remember my prescrapping days and how I would have just thrown them away too.

yeah you know, the people who think scrapping is for low iq people living in poverty, thieves, junkies, and bottom feeders who don't want to work. there's about 5 million of them alone in my small hometown of only 2000 people.

I like to troll them, for example I picked these out of a dumpster today, and I'm going to leave them out where my parents will see them and think i'm up to some kind of white collar crime...they already think i'm up to no good no matter what.

Nice score on the bats. If a few were new, I probably donate
my 10%, but that's just me.

Thanks M668, makes sense when a guy thinks about it but I never would have thought about it on my own (then again I went to my last kid ball game almost a decade ago...).

I know a lot of those people. They are proud of recycling their cans in the city pick up but when I tell them I leave my steel out for the scrappers to pick up they get all indignant as if I am inviting the riff raff. I just chuckle and walk away... ;)

Yeah, get the wood bats anyway. You never know what will be valuable. I found a wood one made in a city near me and got $20 for it because someone wanted a bat from where their father used to work.

If nothing else, you can always use a good bat to beat the scrap out of something.

Im a scrapper who teaches calculus and makes a decent salary.....I just enjoy recycling and making some money while doing it. More importantly, my kids see that there's ALWAYS a way to make an honest buck.

Right on johnnyjeb!!! I have a very different profession than what I do on my own time. I'm sure most people in my facility would be surprised at some of my hobbies (hunting, trapping, scrapping, picking) and have mixed feelings ranging from, "oh, I'd never DO THAT!" to disgust to maybe even pity. That's alright I've learned skills that many of them will never master and would have to rely on someone else to do. My choice.

Most of the people in my direct department are libs and hard core enviros so I try to tell them if the subject comes up how scrapping is actually good for the earth because we're re-using materials that already have had a lot of enegry expended getting out of the ground and made into the particular metal in the first place. That probably works for them but I doubt few would ever stop on the side of a road and pick up a piece of scrap. As for trapping most are opposed because of the killing of the animal and they're "so cute". Yes they are but they are also a renewable resource. In se SD we have more furbearing animals now than we've ever had in the past because of the way we've changed the land (from a grassland to farmland). Most of these furbearers are "edge generalists" that do well in semi-humid farmland areas. What's the difference if I dispatch a coon or its killed by a car or dies from distemper?? At least someone gets to use that resource. Not everything needs to decompose back to the ecosystem naturally...
