Winch Cable Destroyed off my Winch Drum- Anyone Know where I can get pressed terminal

Ok Gents:
Well I was winching up a car and the end of my winch line was obliterated off my winch drum- I didn't let the full line out (Still had about 50 feet on the drum) but I think some kinks and binding in the spool (drum) did it in. I was able to get a replacement line- but it did not come with a terminal end.

Anyone know where I could go to get a terminal end PRESSED onto this 3/8" Steel Line? Not thinking that a do-it-yourself pressing will be sufficient.

Any local Machine shop should be able to do this for you

The big crimpers for fence wire should work for that (Look like bolt cutters). If you want it done by a machine look for a barring press they should supply enough pressure to work for that. grind an extension to a blunt wedge and attach to the ram.

I wonder if it would help to have it brazed after the crimp job??

The heating required for brazing it would rob the strength from it.

If you must weld it use a wire feed and tack it togeather slowly. this will be the best heat wise option of welding the average person can do.

A robot would be best but i doubt any of us can pull one of them out of our back pocket.

using a heavy steel frame and a bottle jack you can bolt yourself togeather a press that will more that handle the crimping job.

Some tractor dealers build their own battery cables that have this type end so they have the press to put them on.

Thanks Gents. Well the pic above was how the winch manufacturer put it on the winch. It failed hard this week.. The replacement cable I bought has a ?brazed? End.

Look for an outfit that sells industrial cable slings and rigging supplies. They should have a proper press to crimp the item onto the cable. They will also probably have the correct connector, too.

Check the old connector-it almost looks like an electrical connector and may be brass or copper.

That is an option if you cannot find a steel connector--use a heavy duty copper electrical connector. An electrical contractor will have the right crimper to put that kind of connector onto your cable. The lug needs to be a good industrial one and not the mickey mouse stuff used for automotive cables.

Since it is an end-of-cable connector and doesn't need to be particularly strong (the friction from the wraps of cable on the drum actually does the lions share of the holding when you're pulling) the copper lug might be just fine. Brazing it in after crimping would be helpful, too.

Sledge this just proves my point that when you do something nice to your truck, trailer (fenders) or car...something breaks just to let you know who or what is in charge.

BTW...my spool just has a hole in it that you stick the cable end in, then you put about a 100 pound load on it and real it in with some guidance.

Man I WISH my drum had the pass through loop. Sadly it does not.. just this puny screw that holds it in place. And you are correct.. Did something nice for the fenders and the winch got Peesed Off!

Now the winch is just being a wench.. I JUST gave her a really expensive Factor55 Thimble upgrade-- not too long ago.. Ungrateful little winch! Grumble Grumble!

Called 6 different Machine Shops- Not a one can do this.. GRRRRR!

I think you are overthinking this. You are thinking that you need a machine to do this when you need a wire crimping tool like in the link.

I crimed my high tensile fence with on like it and it wont let go. You see this fitting on all types of cables. I've seen linemen using a version too.

Heck if I could find a dude with a pair of manual clamps I'd take it- but no one I know has a pair of manuals either. Not a real common "Every Day Tool"

Maybe call a few tool rental places or drive around with a 6 pack and/or cash looking for a Line Crew.

What about a 4x4 shop? I'm sure people break their cables all the time.

Or look for someone that does "swaging".

Or there's this...looks like online purchase only, then ships to local HD.

Home Depot might even have a Swaging tool for customer use in the bulk cable section.

Not sure what part of IN you live but Tractor supply, rural king, or a feed store would have one. Also a commercial electrician would have one to. If worse comes to worse you can make one with a pair of bolt cutter and a drill. Drill out the size you need from the jaws and it should work. this is all they are. The cheap sets are bolt cutters with a section milled out.

If you live by me you could use mine. Funny as it is I found mine in the trash. it took me a few years to realize what they were. I thought someone F*&^%ed up a pair of bolt cutters. It wasn't till I needed to build a fence that I found out what the were.

As a side note it might be a sign to invest into a wench that is made a touch better. Not everyone can do that and I understand but wenches are and can be deadly if you use them alot. It seems that you use yours often and you would wear out the lower level ones quicker.
