I noticed last night on my huge round that someone smashed and grabbed the copper yolks out of all the tvs that were out. KAPOW! through the back and broke and grabbed the yolks. Sigh, was sad to see the messes and sad to know that someone whether new or old was doing that now. :( I'd be ticked if I heard someone doing that at my driveway.
This is one reason why I still pick up tvs when I see them on the curb. If I waited for the county to do something they'd be there till the next big trash day in the fall.

See it all the time. They sit on the curb smashed for weeks to a month before who know what happens to them. What gets me is that they unscrew the back (sometimes) and break the tube. Its only 2 more screws to get the yoke off.
Also, there is a house two blocks behind the store i work at. The people must have moved out and there are 5 busted tvs in front and they been there for 2 weeks now.
People just don't care anymore , we live in a society of immediate gratification , where a a false sense of entitlement makes people think it's ok to do whatever they want whenever they want . It's a person like this that was rummaging thru my garage 2nights ago . I was not aware until they tried to enter thru my basement and the alarm woke the house .
All I know,of this person is they left a Milwaukee best can in my truck bed . Didn't steal anything just took a 5 am tour and left me a can . I have a feeling it's kids so I'm gonna stake out with my paintball gun and light someone up I have lost all tolerance to thieves .
If they were caught inside I would be shooting non paintballs .
If your to lazy to load a tv , take it home , gut it and recycle the tube correctly . Then your not ready to scrap tvs yet . Story's like this give scrappers a bad name and will lead to restrictions on our craft . Actions speak louder than words , these actions tell me they have no concern for their neighbors or the environment. A true junky mentality
Agree. Uncaring/selfish behaviors such as leaving behind glass and/or other mess is inconsiderate, even dangerous. Worse, is the possibility of a kid getting injured out playing around the the glass or other parts. Who knows how far the glass shards go when it's shattered. Then there is getting the attn. of the powers that be who write the laws and restrictions. No matter how one looks at reckless actions, personally I don't see anything good coming from it. I often wonder if all scrappers went out of their way to be considerate, maybe people would actually start to appreciate the service of free pickup of their recyclables and we might be seen in a totally different light?!
Scrapme, I know first hand how these smash n grabbers affect all of us - one time I asked a guy if I could pick up his chairs and he said ok but, don't leave a mess some leave a mess. He said it in a way that I know he had had something happen before.
Same over here , the one that gets me is the pickup truck with the man standing up on the back (Totaly against the law - no seat belt - no insurance).
They are looking into backyards over fences and walls to see what they can steal (The local thing is you leave metal items in the back street and it saves the householder taking it to the local tip). Strangely they never seem to get pulled by the police (if it was me i would be pulled every 5 mins!!).

Its not "scrappers" doing this but imature @$$hats that want to be scrappers or hypes looking for a fix.
They **** up everything for those of us doing it right and give us all a bad name.
Would love to take one of them smashed off yokes and shove it up a very uncomfortable place on them glass shards and all followed by the rest of that tv they left!

I take license numbers and names. I do turn them in, Over bearing regulations are caused by these a holes. If we don't police ourselves some one else WILL.
I still take the TVs. It makes the area look better and you can get some copper and shred in the speakers, and the board isnt too bad either. Either turn it in as E-scrap or pick it apart. I have almost a tuff box full of small parts to tear apart when it gets too cold to work in the garage. If it gets too big and im too lazy, I have turned it in as electric motors. As long as they can see a **** ton of copper in the pieces, usually they dont mind taking it in. But I always ask first.
It must depend on your neighborhood and economics. I figured the people who smash and grab copper from TVs are the ones walking about without tools and see an opportunity to make a buck. Around here people just pick the whole thing up and put it in their truck. Before my father died a couple years ago he was at Cleveland Clinic and driving up to that place you would see people walking around with stolen shopping carts full of metal and TV guts.
They haven't been smashing them up too much yet around here, they sit there at the curb with the cords cut until the owner's drag them around back or they become landmarks. No one seems interested.
One I know of has been at the same street corner since the last spring snowfall, it will probably be there for the first snowfall in Nov at this rate.
Too much of a whale for me to struggle with. I try to do my part by picking up all those microwaves the trash guys won't touch...picked up one during the day and the neighbors must have seen me...scored 4 in a row the next week. LOL
