Selling aka yard respect. ( yards not loyal )

A rant and poll.Observation also.

Yard space. - yes it's a scrap yard but my truck is not scrap or a junker. My truck is not gay so back off. Don't pull in so tight with three trucks throwing off . And common sense says throw behind you not beside you. Stop hitting other vehicles throwing like 50 cents ! Really !

The scale is not visible and or the employee's be stealing. False weights. If you pay your paid swell but if you do normal business your gouged. Low weight to give payers your stolen pounds. A pay to play kick back. Grease a palm.

Reviews- do you write or read them ?

Last. ..our business is a 2 way street. Do you feel it's lop sided. We contract to sell but it's one sided.

Seems my vehicle my time my professional stello is ignored . Treated like a thief and meth head. Why they do that ? I'm not that addict they love. I am a business I value my truck and time. Why f me over ? Racict? Hatist ? Or just naturally dense?

I will review more yards as they must do better. Like giving me a half foot to off load 8 feet of steel items. ( square peg in round hole ...make it fit at your own expense. )

Those paid to ground guide or scale hate on you for making big $ ......Hey ! I did the work ! For free at that ! Who can you trust. ? I'm not getting banned I'm banning yards. A black list. For once? Let's hear your nightmare experience.

Find a new yard. I'm documented the crappy yard by me numerous times on here, I'm not doing again today tho. lol.

Why do they screw you? Cause they can man. Your in Baltimore, a big city, chances are you got more crappy yards then most folks. Why do they judge an assume? Cause again..it's Baltimore. It's known for it's large Heroin addicitions, just like other big cities, not slamming your city, just stating the facts. I used to love Baltimore, then I drove through it one day, an was just so depressed by what I saw, it now makes me dislike the city in general an most others.

Is it right they do this? Nope. Only power you have is to go another yard, an spread the word about a bad yard. I've said it before..You'll hear bad things about a place more then you will good. People tend to be more vocal when they've been done wrong but yet when we get treated right, we keep it to ourselves. Me..I scream from the tallest mtn about both. Good or bad. Do me right an I'll spread the word on you business..do me wrong an it works the same.

Good luck with finding a new yard to call home BS, always sucks when you can't trust a yard.

From reading here on SMF, maybe both sides (the yards and sellers) feel defensive, that they have to protect their own individual interest. I can only look out for myself, as best my limited knowledge allows from reading SMF but I am learning each day. I dont want to cheat the yard and I dont want the yard to cheat me. I want to get paid my due for what I bring in.

Are you referring to doing reviews here on SMF? When I finally sell some stuff by all means, yes,yes,yes, I will review. A job well done deserves letting others know! I find it rewarding to give positive reviews (other sites on non-scrapping topics). I also though, will give a negative, based on personal experience. With the scrap yards and reviews I feel it's just looking out for fellow scrappers.

I agree the yard can be risky for trucks, vehicles. Not an ideal place to drive onto, but if we want to make money, it's a necessary evil. Suppose any place one works/makes money has its' own particular hazards. Maybe knowing the hazards will help in protecting from them, at keast somewhat!?

Here's to scrappers looking out for scrappers! (With ethical scrapping and honesty!)

Another thought on why they do this....The yard BS is speaking of, not all yards.

You mentioned the addict thing, maybe they get a lot in there, an know they can screw them over. A lot of times yards do this is cause they get away with it. They know, even tho you leave...5 more customers will walk in that aren't professionals, an get raped on what they bring in, without even knowing it.

We all know all yards aren't bad, crooked, whatever, but like a lot of things in life, there's always bad in a group. So to the yard owners here..Don't be offended. Unless your the yard in question or do similar tactics. If you do then well..No sympathy from me when karma rolls over you like a 18 wheeler vs a miata.

I know most of the yard owners here, lest the vocal ones, are the first to throw a bad yard under the bus, an good on them for doing so, helps educate our members an future scrappers.

Thanks for input. I go to yards everywhere until given a reason to not return. Since I travel other states I guest visit a yard ....sell and remember my experience. All for a emergency data base in my mind. Also so I'm a resource for local directions ( everyone asked do you go here or were do you go ) . Each yard is unique and offers something different to learn. Ever use a metal gun ? I only saw one used. That yard is still suspect. But the gun IS there.

I did y p reviews online so it's permanent. Hmm

It generally comes back around. The mid-level buyer that effed with me when I was a newby & took a load to him... and he basically pulled my leg with silly requests... well, he's out of business now and I'm still going. I didn't call him out then & I won't now, but karma will catch up.

My primary yard is in Baltimore county on yellow brick rd , if I'm in the city I use that big one under the odonnel street bridge in canton . I removed the names of the yards because your from the area and I'm sure you know what I'm talking about . I would go into the city more but most of my jobs have been in the county and I'm always happy when I follow the yellow brick rd . Polite staff and fair prices .

I went to yellowbrick also. My problem yard is furnace branch rd. I have been a long time customer at both locations. I see and know how they get over . Point Often big loads breeds hate . The curse of money and envy.

Yellow b uses the truck scale you lose on and they get you anyway just pay better attention. Alot is dirty or zink . Low ballers. The steel yards pay 4 steel by 100 lbs but yellow brick pays by gross ton lol . Many other tricks.


With my years ....since 2006 steady....in business I have banned 3 other yards for outrageous practices and pricing . It's like we subsidize them and they are ungrateful . I work **** hard and any of my clients would vouch for that . I'm real that's why my truck is full. I did it all for a thank you and a smile.

I have never had a problem but I'm sure if. I did I would just use the one I mentioned downtown . I agree with you thou that sometimes people are taken advantage of in this business . Yard employees probably think it's ok because it covers all the dirty loads and makes them look Better to their bosses . I will prob just take my steel downtown and use yellow for ferrous .

Maybe we should start our own yard , no bs. this area is dying for a good ewaste buyer !

So in life there are good experiences and bad experiences in every thing we do, if you are not happy with a certain yard and there are many reasons for this then simply do not bring any material there, if a yard makes a mistake and I mean a mistake if you bring it to there attention a legit yard will fix there mistake, if they don't well find another place to sell your goods. most mistakes are mistakes and I can tell you a yards reputation is something that most let me say again most yards keep holy. It will catch up with them sooner than later if they are cheating there customers.i have a funny story I want to share with you, one day in my old yard I was walking around and I see this guy unloading his shred/ white goods load, he was a pretty big sided guy and he cannot get this refrigerator off his truck, so the operator of the loader goes over to his truck and picks the refrigerator off his truck it hits the ground the door opens and it's loaded with cement blocks, so I go over to him and ask him what did he do that for? His answer I wanted it to weigh more, so of course he was banned from my yard and I did not pay him for his load. So there's a perfect example of a unsatisfied customer.

It's funny . I typed out a long response and my battery dies. X,X I'll try to be short . A Baltimore business sounds great. The big boys here have no clue. All payers are lowball and rude . I told ewasted I would like to pool regular runs to him from this area but I'm sure we could branch out with e . I'm game. Just set a meet n greet for starters. That's right up there with the story a yard owner told me. Guy tried to sell him a load of copper pipes with sealed ends (how dumb can you get?). Pipes had been filled with molten lead.

I do incur expenses running a free public service. I only balk when wrong ed by others. I alone do the work of three to for men. And it's evident man . As you see me unload with pride. It looks so fun and easy my charm. I can do 3 to 4 wow loads a day . Regular and heavy. Alot of the time new . Hmmm. I'm no thief or trickster I'm just.........that good. So ! Reputation is everything. Ijs.

No offense, but you're pretty good at tootin' your own horn too. Lol.

I also like to use other yards. One is right on the aluminum they want it, they also are good at shred and steel scrap pay a nice price. But they don't get my copper & brass. They low ball it. The other yard pays and is helpful with the copper and brass, they don't pay well for shred and they just set a price for aluminum all aluminum. So i think its good to use the different yards.

Let's look at the other side of the coin too.

My main yard is GreenGuys Recycling in San Marcos, Texas. There is another yard much closer to me, but I go to GG's.

Why? They are fair, open, helpful, and honest. When you pull into the yard, there are signs that show you where to go and what to do. The scale weight is in big bright green neon and easy to read from the cab of my truck. They direct you to where you need to unload and if you have big items (water heaters), they will pull it off with a forklift/magnet combo. They took the time to explain to rookies (me!) how to get the most from my non-ferrous and <why> certain things get one price and something else gets another price. And finally they do business in a professional, but friendly matter. They remember me and greet me with a "Good morning Mr Willingham."

I have never had a bad experience or left feeling I had been ripped off.

If you knew me you would also lol. I do the impossible ..just imagine what my clients say about me. I have a story for every job. My work is just so rewarding reclaiming space in clutter lives. Power tools . Manual tools. Brute labor and a quick safe pace. After a job it's smiles all around . I know God is pleased no one got used or cheated . Only hard sweaty work being done. I feel like a angel ........with the thousands I have helped for free. I have met the best people in my life doing this work. Since 2006 when in 07 08 me and my w brother /partner pulled in about 1,000 a day or more(split 50/50) dumpster diving on a circuit. All in a 97 Toyota Tacoma ext. Cab 2x4. I have dump truck drivers following me only to ask for work while driving the dump truck lol. Not the first time or last. Hey dude( I'm homeless living in my truck) lol (me ). Big loads affect people but pay out ticket tells the truth . If treated fair .Never what others assume lol. Way less! Like selling ram or cpu chips with no pre weights. .........that's all ?
