I was at an auction over the weekend and found a set of storage servers (11 racks with 15 hard drives in each rack)
Someone paid over $950 for all 11 racks, how could this person make any money on this ?
Is it possible they would use the HD's for something else and not scrap ?

When yo say rack are you talking a full size rack? or you talking about a server that fits in a rack? Next question would be what kind of hard drives were they?
I was going to post a picture of the racks but I can't attach a file with my post.
They called it a "storage server" which is a set of 15 hard drives turned sideways that fit into a rack side by side. Here is a link to the picture. I hope it works.

There were 11 of these "racks" so 165 hard drives in total.
Sure they can make money...if the hard drives work, just reformat and sell away...the hard drive servers also can have value even if onky as parts...many have hot swapable power supplies, internal fan controllers, raid cards sometimes and even the face plates.
If you only averaged $10 per hard drive that is $1650...and I am sure you will het more than that on raid drives...depends on age ect.
Most of those look like Dell Powervaults, which depending on the age could go for 200-250.00 even without the hard drives. Full of decent size drives you get closer to 1000.00-1500.00 each. Even if they just part them out there is potential to double the investment.
Well I have learned a lot these past few days. I appreciate the education from the forum replies.... it's not just about scrap but some equipment is actually worth something on the open market at resale.

Just make sure you have a buyer in place and wont have your money tied up in material for weeks or months looking for a buyer. This goes for anything you buy with the intent to resell.
Mike you'll find that when someone is paying that amount for most things, they are going to make a decent return on it, and most likely already have a market for them as well. Depending on the model, type, etc you can expend to flip them for a decent amount, and with them including the hard drives as well, I guarantee he's probably making out like a bandit. Keep looking back at the old posts and you'll find yourself learning even more. Its been said many times before, and I can attest to the value within these pages. Not to mention each unit worth at least $100 each without the drives. Thats if they are SAS units. If they are older scsi units then your talking less money for sure.
