So I picked up this grill and hoped most of it was stainless, but the only part a magnet doesn't stick to is the lid. I figured being a big Kenmore it would be more NM stainless. Does using a hard drive magnet matter, because I've heard sometime it will somewhat stick to stainless since it is so strong. I just thought the doors and front trim would be SS too so it confused me. Ever happened to you before or is this normal?

They make them like that because it's cheaper to use low grade stainless (magnetic). I've never found a full stainless grill before, only parts. The all stainless ones are rare in the scrap world because they are much more expensive. That means less people are buying them and throwing them away.
that makes sense, so it is more normal to find one like this than an all SS one?
The first one I got like that 2 weeks ago was all SS, made me over $20 at the yard. I got real excited when I saw another last Friday, looked identical except name brand, so I scoop it up and when I get home...my magnet sticks to EVERYTHING! :( Oh well, $12 is better than NO$)
Ya I had to go a little out of my way to get it but it must weight around 200 at least, the lady I got it from tried to help me load it and couldn't lift one side. The heavy weight makes up for lack of SS
You should check the doors again, on the SS one I found a magnet stuck because the INSIDE panels were iron, the outside was SS for protection from the elements.
Thats what I thought it would be but I took it off and it was still magnetic
Usually only the handles are stainless for some reason.
Just got one of those last week. ALL Magnetic. All I got out of it was a tiny bit of brass from the valves.. and a smidge of aluminum. Heck even my knobs were chrome plated plastic. But at free.. I'll make some duckets off it. No complaints!
2 weeks ago I had two that looked identical, one had stainless doors with a stainless and aluminum top, and the other was all magnetic with very thin aluminum.
I just noticed on local yards list they have a price for non magnetic stainless steel. They always rejected it and bought at shred price. Never could get a price list before because no one wants to print one for prices that change so often. Finally they post online and update daily.

Yep if your yard pays for dirty stainless its a little better than steel price.
ONE time I found a total SS grill, it netting a nice few dollars. now, I know that even thought they look SS most of the time I'm gonna end up being lucky with the handle being SS lol.
out of all of the grills i have done one was mostly ss. otherwise all iron. either way they were all money in the bank.
If they have a side burner, open it up to usually find a nice brass circle on top of the burner
