Someone hit me today, no doubt it was their fault. It smashed in the driver side door and front fender and cracked the windshield. The car had 145k miles and a salvage rebuilt title, having been in 2 major accidents before I bought it. Im hoping that the insurance totals it, but if not I'll probably put the repair money towards a new truck and sell the car as scrap. Any general ideas of what I could get for it?
$300 from a yard whole is what i would guess for that car. If you have a place to part it out I would do that and you could make over $1000 easy just selling the parts on ebay. Not to mention the large parts like engine and tranny you could sell locally.
Most importantly I hope no one was hurt. Honestly though, your car is almost certainly going to be a total loss. Whenever the insurance goes to settle with you on it I would retain salvage since you're thinking about scrapping it. I agree with PTS that if you have the space and time I would part it out, especially being an acura there's a good market out there for parts. When you retain salvage the insurance company should pay you the value of the car less salvage value.
niether of us was hurt, the guy knew it was his fault and kept apologizing. i was maybe going 20-30 and he pulled out from a stop sign not realizing that i didnt have a stop sign and hit me. unfortunately my house is at the end of a row on a one way street with no alley behind, so i only have on street parking. or i would consider parting it out. oh well i consider this a blessing in disguise, ive been wanting to get a truck for a while and now i most likely will be getting one. plus i was dreading having to drop 300$ on various repairs to the car so it would pass inspection at the end of may.
If your car still runs and drives you could also probably sell it as is for more than the salvage value also. There's always people looking for cheap cars for transportation that may be a body tech or know someone who is.
As an example, there was an old 98 Toyota Corolla that was totalled and at the shop I worked at. The car was smashed on the door and fender (kind of like yours) but still drove no problem. A buddy of mine offered to buy it from the owner for $500. I think the insurance company only charged the owner a $250 salvage value so that owner made an extra $250 without doing anything. Here's the great part, my friend found a used door at a salvage yard that happened to be the same color for only $75. He then just got some chains and pulled the pillar out a little so the door would fit on and close properly (literally took him about 10 minutes) and then sold it for $1200! He basically doubled his money for maybe 20 minutes of work. Now cut out the middle man and that could be an option for you.
that is a good idea, I do all my own work on my cars anyway and I'm pretty good at it. it still drives fine, juste a little out of alignment. I actually did the alignment myself once when I had to change the passenger inner tie rod, just eyeballed the toe and adjusted the tie rods until both wheels were straight, and it drove straight as an arrow. I'm probably gonna do it again today so it at least runs straight while I'm still driving it. should I let the insurance adjuster look at it before I fix the alignment or will it not matter?
At least pull some of the easier interior parts off it: radio, ac/heat controls, gauges, stuff like that. You'll lose a few pounds on the car but could make way more on ebay/craigslist
Doing an alignment yourself won't matter. Alignment isn't really anything the adjuster can see anyway. If it was repairable all he'll look for is to see if there was an impact on the wheel/tire and if there was he would write for an alignment then. Plus, even if you paid, you could be reimbursed for it since you're mitigating your damages, provided it was justified and again, there are signs of impact on the wheel/tire. Either way doing your own alignment won't interfere with anything.Quote:
