scrapping tool steel

Hello,

I am considering scrapping a few old plastic injection molds (mostly P20 tool steel) and have a few questions:

- Does the grade of steel (in this case annealed P20, hardness 32-36) have any impact on scrap pricing?
- Some of the tools are kirksite and some are hybrid aluminum/steel tools (core side is aluminum). Will it increase return to separate those out first?
- Will the size of some of the mold halves (largest is about 6'x6'x3', 16,000 lbs) change scrap pricing?
- Should I be using the HMS #1 rates on this stuff?

I noticed this is your first post? So I will try to help you with three questions of my own. 1. have you tried the search feature in upper right corner of each page? 2. Are have you tried the "similar threads on the scrap metal forum" at bottom of each thread? 3. Have you introduced yourself in the new member thread? These really are good things for you to do, it will be a good way to familiarize yourself to the forum for starters!

Your average scrap yard will grade tool steel as normal steel. What you want is a company that deals in only tool steel scrap which are hard to find. I'm using hss m7 as an example as this is the only tool steel I have tried to scrap unsuccessfully by the way.
