Google is failing me. So I have a few questions. The fist: Are there vehicle engines that are worth pulling to sell. I am more referring to older vehicles let's say before 1980 and not running and in poor condition and I could just rip them and flip em. I know enough to not scap a 65 impala lol. I am just looking for some general guidelines, what shape do they need to be in, how do you tell if they are rebuildable.
Well, if you come up on a sports car pre 1980 then there is a huge market in not only the engine but the transmission and parts. My guideline is if its hard to roll on a trailer, its not worthy. Resale can be pretty close to scrap value. Another thing to consider is a title.. you get good money for ones in good shape with a title. People buy tires and rims all the time regardless of what size or brand, its almost decorative for some people. If you have the time, list all vehicles on CL, regardless of the condition. who knows u might get a call.
Got $10. once from a fender emblem on Ebay, if their rare nowadays then pull the emblems (and there's a list of other stuff saleable) for Ebay, before you scrap it.
We had quite a discussion about all the sellable smaller stuff awhile back.
I'm not a car guy but I would think there would be a "classic car forum" someware on line. These guys are always looking for car parts. If you pull a motor out of a car try to turn the motor by putting a socket and breaker bar on the bolt on the front of the motor if it turns then it should be rebuildable if it won't turn then it is siezed.
Just depends on what people are restoring. My dad has a restored pinto and will pay top dollar for parts. But one thing I do know is that Hondas cars flip fast to the ricer guys but they are some low ballers.
old Cadillac and Pontiac v8's are typically worth pulling, as long as it is before they started sharing engine platforms, diesels are typically worth pulling, and maybe other running engines are worth pulling (v8's or turbo models)
I wouldn't bother with a clapped out Chevy, unless it has some rarer parts, like checking the heads, intake manifold, and if it is a rarer block (400 small block, 283 small block, small big blocks, larger big blocks, not 454).
I'm not much of a Ford guy, so ymmv with all of it.
motors are usually a hard sell unless your selling it (and pricing it) as a rebuild.

I am not much of a car guy so I'm just making sure. Thank you for the reminder of the trim and what not. I have space and wouldent be a huge deal to sit on motors, if they sold.
True story, During the summers when I was in school I worked for an old hippie doing landscaping. Right before I started my junior year he said I could have his sons car in his barn for 500$. I went and looked at it and I thought it was one of those kit cars, it was in a few pecies. Turns out that guy sold it for 10k a few months later, it was a 78 opal, I thought it was a kit car because it had one of those one seat James bond bodies on it. hahahaha!!!!!!
@kcscrapper my first car was a 76? mercury bobcat, mercurys version of the pinto. My grampa gave it to me and it was in perfect shape. People would see it from the front and get excited because they thought it was a Cougar, then get a sad look when they saw the hatch back.
Good sbc Chevy cores usually only go for 100-200, maybe 300-500 if it's a 400 or 454. That's the market around here anyhow, I'm getting out of the pre 1995 stuf, much easier to slang parts off the later model cars and pickups.
Interesting thread. Id think the late 70s and earlier stuff would have decent resale. That 53 panel van my father bought is getting a complete driveline from an early 70s nova. Alot of people are putting newer engines and drivelines into these old cars for better reliability and so they can cruise down the highways comfortably.
Iv also got a core buyer that buys trannys for $20-25 each. Was thinkin next time hes in im gonna have a little chat with him and see if hes still paying that. If he is im sure people would be interested in selling blown/old trannys with no real rebuildable core value. $5-10 and I pick up. Make $10-20 per unit.
I only know about Dodge engines pre 1980. The 318 and 360 are worth $50 or more if they aren't locked up. When you get pre 1972 then you have the "steel crank" in the 318 which is valuable to racers so they can go around $100. I'd say pretty much any big block Dodge (383, 400, 440, 413) are worth $100 or more to someone looking to restore a car. Even the small 273 V8 is worth keeping for the A frame car guys who like Valiants, Darts and Barracudas.
The 340 engines are getting hard to find, so they will bring more. I'm in the market for one myself for my 71 Dodge Demon. You should be able to get $300 - $400 for one that's in buildable shape.
Oh, and I'll take all the 426 Hemi engines you can get cheap!
The good thing about Dodge is the easy engine ID. The engine size is cast into the side of the block just under the exhaust manifold.
Myself being a mopar guy, I would say any 340, 383, 440 or hemi is worth good money. 68-73 340's are worth easily $300-1000 as a core, depending on year and how complete. 383's are worth a couple of hundred as a core. The early 440's 68-72 with steel crank are worth $300-600, any 66-71 426 hemi is worth thousands, even if rusty, seized, etc. I have personally sold plenty of core mopar engines at these prices. The cars these come out of are usually worth money too, check before scrapping!
I'm a diesel enthusiast, so any old Diesel engine that you run across in a car, truck, generator, or water pump I would be interested in taking a look BEFORE you scrap it.

That they do John especially in California...even the 2 wheel drives are popular because from what I understand the conversion to 4 wheel is pretty easy. My son is big into Honda's and has a wagon that he has lowered and put nice rims on. Have to admit I love the stance and may just buy it from him when the day comes.Quote:

One thing I know for a fact is Volkswagen Bugs in any condition are worth more than scrap because they are the base for many dune, sand and mud buggies, I belive the frames are also used for some kind of kart racing.
