I got some old thin chain and have a big magnet . I bent chain and put bolt thru braket of magnet. Now i can reach a good 50 foot to bottom of big trash cans i can not get in and out of. You know for those hard to reach areas.magnet was from some desk sighn you know you stretch it across a walk way to keep customers back like at a bank. I will add bigger stronger magnet later if too weak. The one i have now sticks to my big rolling tool box and can move it.

I was in tractor supply the other day and seen a crap picker upper with a handle, its something that old people could use to grab something on the top shelf, immediately when I seen it im like, yep thatd be a good thing to have when dumpster picking. too bad I don't dumpster pick anymore.
yeah i like those i have one from harbor freight but is not very long the chain magnetcworks purty good lol used it yo get scrap pipe today from work dumpster they were just throwing it away
Good idea. I have a peice of conduit with a metal hook on the end that works really well. I also use it for unloading my truck. Just stand at the tailgate and hook what I want and pull it out.
ya i just use a grabber too its about 7ft long and I welded stronger side pieces to it so i can pick up heavier things plus banging it around or using it to move other things out of the way. it does not break easy that way. i do like the inventive magnet on a chain but what about alu and other non mag items. it fun making things for this type of job, made my own cell phone holder for my truck last year.
i will try to take picture later foroum does not allow mine for some reason i guess not a member long enough lol. i yse my graber claw ir a ling stiff wire hook for non magnetic scrap or i judt dive in and throw it out lol hoik and claw work ok just limited reach i will find linger pole for hook someday
So a claw or hook with a magnet attached may be best, that way you could get both ferris or non. I would be worried about too strong of magnet as it could get stuck to roll off...
I have an aluminum extending pole with a hook on the end. Got it off a boat I was scrapping. I believe sailors use them to grab their lines.
I just have a long stick with a magnet attached. Makes cleaning up all those infernal screws, broken ferrite, etc so much easier.
Also works well as a way to tell what screws an other bits are non-ferrous as it won't pick them up.
Silly I know, but it saves me time when it comes to cleaning up any mess I make in the shop.
