Looking to purchase 16"-24" cast iron pipe

We are a research and development company looking to obtain two items:

1. We're looking for cast iron pipes with mechanical joints. The joints should be intact with 1-2 meters of pipe on either side of the joint. Pipe diameters preferred would range from 16" up to 24", but larger pipe might be okay as well. If these came from a gas utility, that would also be preferred.

2. This is a long-shot, but we're looking for pieces of cast iron that have been affected by graphitic corrosion / graphitization.

I know we are looking for a small quantity, but we are willing to pay a premium price for the right pieces. Any advice on where to look would be very helpful.

I get alot of emails from govliquidation or govdeals regarding large lots of used and new pipe...........Perhaps that would be something you could check out..............If I am wrong I apologize only trying to help

I think your better bet might be going to contractors who do underground pipe work.

Another approach would be to go to city engineering departments who are in charge of getting piping upgrades (ie, are letting the contracts) and tell them what you are looking for. If it is specifically for gas lines, I don't know if the gas utility in each city would own the lines, but go to whomever does own the lines. I've never seen gas lines done with jointed pipe--it must be a very old technique. Around here its plastic or welded steel pipe.

Since you are wanting to address what is likely a problem to all of these owners, they are likely to be interested in what you want...

@sawmilleng - We have the request in to 7 or 8 utilities who operate large diameter cast iron gas mains. We have good relationships with many of these companies and they have been very willing to help. I also have been contacting the pipeline contractors that perform the replacement work. 80% of the cast iron gas mains in the US are in the northeast. These are typically bell and spigot joint or mechanical joint pipe. There have been extensive programs to replace the cast iron with plastic or steel. Usually its the smaller diameter cast iron mains that have more risk of failure and get replaced first. Larger diameter cast iron mains have much stronger wall thickness.

Cincinnati, Ohio is in the process of updating large amounts of there old gas pipes for a street car project. I think its was delayed due to the weather and politics so they may have some that still being done.
