Sad story of a former employee

About 2 years ago I met a guy named Doug when I started working at a furniture transport company. I soon learned that he was addicted to drugs and sometimes had no ride to work or money to eat. I drove him to and from work for a while and helped him out if I could until one day he passed out in the company bathroom from a slight overdose. After visiting the hospital me and him had a long talk about him getting help. Our boss paid for treatment and promised to hold a spot for him. After his 28 day program he came back to work and was clean. He worked hard bought himself his first truck and got his license. When I got laid off I decided to take scrap and clean outs full time . Even thou he still worked at the transport company he wanted extra money so he could get his own place. So I contracted out him and his truck for big jobs from time to time. He moved back to his parents house after his program and was doing good until last night. He had a bad night and scored some heroin , turns out the last 2 weeks these dealers have been dealing bad batches that have made it up to ny , he got a hold of some and his parents found him overdosed in his room. He was a great guy and a great worker , it sickens me that this happened to him cause out of all people he honestly didn't deserve it, everyone says that when someone dies they were a great person but Doug really was he didn't even clean up for himself he cleaned up so his mom could be happy. Drugs are tough to shake. I lost my best friend to overdose of Darvon and alcohol - just about this time 43 years ago.

So sorry for your loss. You sound like a true friend, and I'm sure he was always grateful to you for helping him get on the right path.

They say if you don't do it for yourself that it can't be done...it's a tough decease to keep in check.

I don't think he was feeling the addiction his parents said he started to get lax about going to meeting etc

Yes very tough he made it look really easy when he was out of the program I guess it wasn't what it seemed

Very sorry to hear about your friend. My girlfried was into drugs during most of her highschool life, never got into heroin but pretty much everything else. She never went to class and didnt graduate when all her friends did. When I met her she was trying to ger better, but had the odd time where she did something. Soon after we started dating she decided to turn her life around. She got her highschool diploma and is now going to school for civil engineering and is getting high 80s to 90s in every class. Shes been clean over two years now and says shes never looked back.

For every sad story iv heard there are very few good ones. I hope my girlfriends story can help encourage anyone else who may be struggling or who knows someone who is. Its never too late to get help.

I know what you mean. I see all kinds of folks with these problems downtown, you can really tell and it makes me feel terrible.

I'm sorry for your loss gamedayron, my one friend i ran cross country with whos now in college does drugs. everything from marijuana to lsd and acid and probably more. Nothing happened to him yet but its pretty scary and it gets worse up in college

Sorry to hear such a thing Ryan. Sounds like he was doing good, a darn shame. Heroin is a nasty drug. An very tough to kick an stay off of. This new stuff going around is truly bad news, they are spiking it with very hard prescription drugs if I remember the article I was reading recently. You can ask any past user of Heroin an they will tell you it's a battle every day to stay off it.

Jord, stay with your lady an support her always, an she'll be fine. Sadly most recovering addicts do not have that support, an slip back into the habit. I may not know her, but I'm proud of her, for staying sober, an fighting that addiction. I have a friend of a friend here on the sandbar who is a recovering Heroin addict an it's a struggle every day for her. It cost her, her children, and family. It took that to make her seek help, it's really a shame.

Nobody deserves to die from drug addiction. Was reading an article recently about how people addicted to prescription drugs end up using street heroin because it is much cheaper (and as noted purity is all over the place and can kill). Addicts have their brains rewired from drugs, its hard to stop once you start.

sorry to hear of your loss, i have had friends that fought that demon and sadly lost.

i too deal with that demon in my ear from time to time and i don't care what anyone says, that demon can be quieted; but it never, ever goes away completely.

i sincerely hope you and Doug's family can find some peace in knowing that he is in a better place and never has to deal with that struggle again.
