I'm picking up 2 monitors and a few keyboard tomorrow and was reading on how to recycle, and mostly I found that you have to pay to dispose of them.
However, I found out that Staples will take computer monitors (NOT TV'S) for free.

Hopefully this can help if you have a local store and don't know what to do with them.
My Goodwill will take my monitors after I pull the goodies and replace the back, but not all are that nice. your results may vary.
Ya I looked into that but the closest one to me that accepts them is 20+ miles from my house. Figured I'll try a closer one first. If not, I can just bring it to my town's drop off. My state passed a law saying each town HAS to accept these items

Best Buy takes my crt monitors and TV's under 32" after there gutted. Talked to the stock room manager and they let me bring 15-18 at one time each week. We agreed on a regular day, mine is Friday since there truck picks up on Saturday, so they don't have to keep them long.
They normally only take up to 3 per day, and I would never get anything done running to drop off every day, so it has been a really good arrangement for me. Each one operates different but wouldn't hurt to check with your local store.
Best Buy. I dropped off a CRT monitor today. Just walked it in and set it down next to the greeter at the front door. He said thanks and I said thanks and that was it. Dropped off 2 tv's on Monday and 3 monitors last Friday.
They're a common item I find around apartment dumpsters, so I pull off the back, pull the wiring, boards, speakers, degaussing cable, and the copper yoke. Place the back on and off to Best Buy. I have even done a couple on the tail gate on my truck to avoid taking them home to do the work.

In my area of Ohio everybody wants between 5 & 10 dollars to take TV's and monitors (depending on size). Kinda makes them not worth doing. It's a shame because there so abundant. I'm gonna try Best Buy to get rid of the ones I have but even then the closest one is around 30mi away. Kinda kills it for me.

Wherever you're located, though, keep in mind that some of the old CRT monitors, such as the IBM 5153 color monitor, are highly collectible. Also, there is still a market for older "multisync"-type CRT monitors because they're compatible with both older and newer video standards, so they're still used for arcade games, vintage gaming systems, vintage computers, etc. A lot of the older video standards (such as CGA, for example) have horizontal refresh rates that are too low for newer CRTs and LCDs. Generally, if you find a multisync monitor (in decent condition) that's capable of handling 15KHz horizontal frequency, there should be somebody out there who will want to buy it from you.
I have between 4-500 on hand right now. ANYONE interested in them, make me an offer. I WILL NOT SHIP these though. You come and get them.
For anyone thinking of taking their crts to Staples or Best Buy or any other retail big box, make sure to read the fine print. Best Buy only takes crts if you trade them in for a new tv and even then they have to fit a criteria. Not sure about Staples.
