first big e-scrap pickup yesterday, and first scrapyard trip today

Ive been scrapping electronics for a little over a month now. ive posted ads on craigslist and other places offering free e-waste pickup, and ive been leaving business cards at all my stops. Yesterday I picked up my first big load, and I got it because of a referral. it was about a 45 min drive, and i had to borrow a 16' box truck from my main job, but i think it was worth it. originally the guy told me there was about 10 pcs, only a few tvs and monitors, and a bunch of other stuff. when i got there, turns out theres 6 pcs and 12 tvs/monitors, as well as a bunch of random things i havent even looked at yet. sseveral printers, 2 of the big HEAVY surge protectors, stereo equipment, random cables/office equipment. it took me 2 hours to get everything into my basement, and 2 of the huge tvs i dropped pulling of the truck, and dropped again going down the stairs off my deck. i decided after this load im not taking anymore tvs unless its part of a sweeter deal.

after i got all this stuff into my basement, i had to clean some stuff out to make room, so i took my old fridge, water heater,cast iron rad, and several buckets of random ferrous metal, as well as about 100# of aluminum/stainless steel. my back is hurtin today lol. i walked out of the yard with $130. i was a little dissappointed at first, cause i thought i would bring home around $300, but now i have a better idea of how everything works and how much cash i can expect to make. Most of the stuff i took today were old cast aluminum tools, random bits of ss and al from ewaste, and a few radiators. i still have 2 buvkets of wire to strip, and half a bucket full of bare bright already, as well as lots of pcbs, ram etc. not to mention that pile of junk up there lol.

Congratulations. That was a learning experience as far as TVs & monitors. It just keeps getting better.

Yeah I have the space to store them for a little while, I'll take them to best buy every few days till they're gone. I was looking through the boxes last night, and I found a ps2, an old raymar stereo, a few fax machines and printers, a pocket pc, an old paymaster check writer thingy, several Dell keyboards some brand new, an intercom system, routers, and over 50 lbs of misc cords

the intercom might fetch a few dollars on ebay/craigslist. I see a flat screen it it works, it's got resale value. The rest I say, have a blast taking taking it all apart. I suggest you wear gloves ($5 mechanic gloves from walmart/harbor freight are my favorite). the glass in the scanners and printers is PLATE glass not tempered, it'll break in shards, be careful!

Good job! I know for some crt's are a burden, but I love em! In fact I thinking of offering 75cents to $1.00 For 17 inch or bigger for 10 or more to local scrappers, as long as they are intact cut cords would be ok but otherwise intact.

In trying to sort everything and I'm putting some items to the side to test them and possibly sell them. When I first started I picked up every crt that I saw, and I was throwing them in my dumpster at work after I stripped them, until I got to work one morning and a tv I had thrown out the day before was sitting on the dock lol. The cost to recycle them in my area is ridiculous! Anywhere from $20 - $50 depending on the size. I contacted newtech recycling in NJ, bout an hour from me, and they charge .40/# for stripped tvs. Bestbuy will take 3 a day under 32" so I'm doing that for now, but I feel like off they keep seeing me bring tvs in they might cut me off since their service is for residential recycling not for businesses. So once I get rid of all these I'm not taking anymore unless it's part of a bigger load.

That's a big problem. My business is located in Delaware and they have free drop off. That's why I take all I can get. And, I'll only pick up 10or more, unless its part of a lot.

junk freak, where at in Delaware? and what's the place called? If I can find somewhere 1-2 hours away with free disposal, I can load up my 24' box truck with tvs and haul them all in.

Just wanted to post a little update, I have barely scrapped any of this stuff yet. I've been selling the valuable items on eBay and I made $600 the past 3 days! Sold a lot of random items for $10-50 , but one printer, an alps md-5000 thermal printer I just sold for$400! It's been a great week!
