I'm following some gov auctions on spend brass, and it requires they be mutilated on site.
What's the best way to go about that?
Its thousands of pounds of the stuff and I'm not sure, maybe a portable shredder/chopper? Maybe a chemical solution to pour on them to render them non-reloadable?
your going to want to check with them and how they want them done. I bet its shreded or crushed.
I guess it depends on the time and money you got to do the job. I'm not sure brass from ammo will get you the same price as other brass, so be cautious, although any unfired rounds will likely go off during the multilation process. I've heard that ammo brass can be discounted a lot.
Are there specs on the degree of multilation? A kink across a cartridge is good enough? Just so it can't be easily reloaded?
How big are the cartridge cases? If they are small arms, say up to 50 bmg, you might be able to toss them thru a garden shredder to bung them up.
Can you access a concrete surface? Rent a self-propelled vibratory compactor, the kind that has a drum up front and two rubber tires behind and drive over them.
How about taking a heavy shop press, like a 50 tonner. Get a chunk of 12" pipe with a bottom welded into it, like a heavy duty 5 gallon bucket...fill with brass, put a round plate on the top that fits inside the bucket, and press away. You might actually get bricks of squished cartridges out of this.
Get an anvil and a big hammer. and a chair. Pound away.
I doubt that the military would let you fiddle with chemicals on their site.
