Retiring from scrapping

I always loved breaking things, used to get in trouble and now I am paid for it. I am retiring from scrapping and turning my business over to my sons after one year as a full time scrapper. Not many individuals retire from scrapping. I have five farms I am scrapping at the same time and three more I promised to complete this summer. I will spend the next month and a half preparing the farms so my sons can just turn and burn. One is a teacher and the other is going to school, so this summer they will work together to fulfill my obligations. Nothing better than turning your business over to the next generation.

The next adventure is breaking bigger things. Demolition is the next challenge. Consultant, logistics expert, equipment purchasing, and materials specialist is the next calling. No I am not out of scrapping, just a new niche. Sweat deal that I will share when I am able.

I still need scrap prices from both coasts, the Great Lakes, and the Gulf of Mexico. I also need contacts for furious and non-furious metals. We need 20 torches, and two individuals have already contacted me. If any millwrights are lurking, please pm me. I will tell you this project came from the forum and you never know who is lurking. Many individuals question my sanity for doing what I do, but I love challenges and this one presents no risk. So this is my second retirement and should be retiring from my third occupation in one year.

Lessons learned: Treat everyone with respect, stick to your values, believe in your morals, live by your ethics, and do not question Karma. Boomerang theory - what goes around, comes around. I want to motivate others to pursue their calling. I am blessed and lucky and believe others will be blessed as well. And most of all I want to thank the forum and all the members for their ideas, advice, education, and motivation as the next challenge presents itself. Without you this opportunity would not have been a possibility. Thank you.

Haven't known you that long, Patriot, but your endeavors are quite similar to mine here in Nebraska. . . farmstead cleanups, and I was hoping to enjoy your experience as we go along. I don't think I'll be moving on to bigger ventures like you are; I'm just happy to cruise along in humility. Fast forward and Godspeed to you. Be Careful, report back and thanks for your input.

Is this a job away from home and essentially dismantling the one plant? In other words, are you eventually coming back home? Are there possibilities for continuing with your new employer? Is this far away from home? I'm scratching my head at your titling this post as "retiring from scrapping"...I think you are just kicking your scrapping into high gear--maybe getting away from the tools yourself but being at the center of getting (and keeping) the scrapping effort moving, in a big time way, with a big salary to match!

I think you have a unique position, if your employer will let you, take photos as the job progresses and post them on SMF, along with a commentary. It would make a heck of a epic scrapping story! Even if you have to keep it to yourself until the job is over and then post it....

I always understood it to be "Ferrous" and "non-ferrous". But I'll bet an I- beam coming down from 9 stories, just before it hits the ground, could be called "furious"!! And I'd love to see that 4" walled steam drum hit the ground from up there. It probably wouldn't even dent.

Thanks for all the comments. Mech. and Saw - misprint, wrote the post without my glasses and when spell check came up I just hit the first suggestion. I am not giving up the ranch in fact a lot of the work will be done from home. I am giving up the physical part of scrapping for the time being to guide a crew through a demolition process. They are providing housing when I am on the job site. They have a demolition foreman that will be my eyes and ears on the ground when I am not there.

Instead of my torch, I will be using a phone and computer to scrap. Retiring from scrapping may be misleading to some. To me, retirement is a serious of steps. When I was a teacher, I spent three months a year getting in shape for retirement. I just love using the term because it means I am free. Free to make my own decisions, control my time, and do what I want when I want. This is just another steep learning curve that will require focus and letting go of my previous challenges. That is what retirement means to me. Thanks again for the education provided by this forum. Without you, this adventure would not be possible.

I will keep the forum updated with pictures because I think I will be learning a lot, will have lots of questions, and will want to add to the scrap curriculum here. Thanks again.
