Buying cable/sat receivers?

Tried searching but couldnt find a definative answer. I had a guy contact me saying he has 6 boxes of cable/sat receivers, boards and parts. I have an ad out for buying computer related stuff, not these sat boxes. That being said, what would be a reasonable price to buy these at? Is it even worth it? I know .15-.20 lb is the going rate for computers. But in my reading iv found that these cable/sat boards are only mid grade, so .15 lb sounds too high to me.

Oh ya and i wouldnt offer to buy any of the stuff other than boards or complete units.

how big of boxes ? offer to recycle them as a courtesy

I pay .75 ea. for them and receive the steel top/bottom, mid grade board, and power supply board with transformer, and cord.
On the bigger sat boards their about a pound apiece, or more. My last mid grade hi was 1.70lb.

I buy for about $1 each receiver, although some newer ones I pay $2. I can sell newer ones on Ebay for $15-$30 each (some even more) if working. If not, you get a nice board and possibly a 100gb or higher hard drive. Obviously you have to take into account your expenses. Make sure you get the power cords and remotes as well. You may need a special bit for opening up some of those, but you can get it cheap/easy on ebay. For just the boards you can contact a buyer on here and see what they pay. Good luck!

I guess it comes down to whether or not you resell on ebay or scrap, I only scrap them so I only take donated ones, with the prices going down I don't feel it is worth paying for them but that's just me.

If I can remember correctly each box is around 51 cents scrap value before the board is sold. That's steel, brass, copper, transformers, everything but the board. Maybe someone else can weigh in on that amount. But I think that's what I remember it breaking down to.

Thanks guys, he was only interested in gettin cash for it so i had to let the stuff go. Dont have buyers for anything other than puter scrap up here. Nobody for mid or low grade boards so I couldnt see myself making much after buying them, time, fuel and them shipping.

Best thing I love about the sat boxes...guy I get them from, he leaves the cards in them, with that gold spot. lol. He always laughs as I pluck them out an stick them with the stash I'm building up of them.

Oh an the HD's in the dvr ones are nice to. Not all sat boxes an boards are the same. Trot I think you know what I mean by this, same with LNB's.

There is money in them Jord, but like everything else it comes down to how cheap you can get it. I get them free from Direct TV guy, my thrift store( don't know why people donate them..but I'll take'm) an when I do pay it's not much more then .75 to 1.00 depending on the yard sale/flea market/seller.

I got a set at home depot. Pretty cheap. Husky brand I think. All of the bits store in the handle.

At the price of gold an the uncertainty, I pay very little for stuff at this time. A box with a hard drive, I may pay a dollar or two, but beyond that, I would not pay more than 25 cents for a box right now.

Just my 2 cents.

I also get my bits local. Less I gotta deal with Evilbay (BG, or BC...I forget who termed it that..) the better. Buying or selling. lol.

I hear what your saying on buying Parrot. You gotta adjust of course for the current market. I tend to only pay for the DVR's, an usually it's a bundle deal at a yardsale or flea market type place. Hence the 1.00. I'll gladly pay the buck, get the box, several things of cords, chargers, an remotes.

As always tho...my area is far from typical. So YMMV. Folks down here upgrade a lot for the rental homes. Guess ya gotta have the top of the line stuff if you want to rent your house for 3k a week. ( That's not even close to high end for here, north end of my sandbar, you can pay in the 5 digits for a week stay. Your also talking huge homes 8 to 10 bedroom, ocean side, pool, etc.) So yea..again YMMV.

I wouldn't buy them, prices keep dropping. Time is money I found out from experience, luckily the guy I got 150 receivers from wasn't a greedy person, and I ended up getting them for free.

Thats the problem here. Everyone wants money for their junk. I dont have a problem paying people but Ill pay whats fair. Everyone wants waaaay more than what their stuff is worth. Another big issue iv encountered is people reply to ads, then when I contact them they never get back to me. Ever. Really frustrating.

Just gotta find the right sellers Jord. You know my love of thrift stores, it applies to Yard sales to. Folks will bundle stuff to get rid of it. I know it for fact, I get some great deals that way.

I got a full box of modems, several dvrs, 5 cell phones, an about 15lbs of wire one day at a yard sale. Total cost - 3.00 I made my money back on just the wire, everything else was pure profit. I don't use CL a lot, so I don't run into the problems some folks do with buying things. I hit yard sales, thrift stores, flea markets, etc. Those people will bargain with you. Someone could be moving, someone might need space an stuff has been sitting to long(Thrift stores), an some just sell whatever cheap. CL is a great tool, but you gotta deal with a lot of idiots. Heh. Not sure that thing ya'll got up north, forget the name, but maybe it has less idiots.

Oh an reason I got that good deal for $3 bucks was cause the people were moving to Fl an didn't want to take it with them. You can find great deals, you just have to seek them out.

Edit to add: Also with Yard sales, an the others to a degree, it gives you an ability to make a new contact, that becomes regular. I've gained several of mine that way.

Youre thinkin of Kijiji. Exactly like craigslist but its a MUCH nicer and easier to use site IMO.

Iv looked into thrift shops but there are no little family owned ones here. Just larger chains like Goodwill and Salvation Army. The one small one I found, the guy scraps stuff himself. Garage sales are a good idea. Will probly have to wait till spring though cause theres a few inches of snow outside so I dont think anyones gonna have a yard sale LOL. If I cant find anything with the GP im going to look into contacting larger companies. Im not gettin nearly enough from the GP to keep me busy. Finished tearing down all the stuff I had in a few hours on monday and havent received any more material since the weekend. Even with posting paid "top ads" (ads that show up first on the list every time) im not gettin any calls.

The problem here is theres a company that has literally dozens, if not over 100 bins around the city with "free e waste drop off" posed, and thats what people see. Not alot of people think of goin on kijiji to get rid of stuff. They see the bins and just go there. So thats one thing im workin against. That and over a dozen e waste remival ads lol its very competative. The one leg up iv got is this forum and support from the awesome members.

Just figured I would do another follow up on the Directv sat. receivers. I bought 4 at a garage sale for about $2 each. Listed them yesterday individually and sold one this morning. Here is the listing: DirecTV DVR R15 300 Satellite Receiver with Cord and Remote | eBay

Probably will cost $20 in shipping/handling costs and ebay/paypal fees, so should clear about $18 for 20 minutes of work to list on ebay, pack and have ready for USPS.

I would pay no higher than short steel price for them, assuming fuel is not being spent. I don't think I have ever gotten payed less than motherboard prices for those boards though. sometimes a few go in the small socket colored board pricing, but usually green motherboard or higher.

It would be advised to remove the excess plastic an metal. Always helps, just like when dealing with normal boards.

I agree with Matt on the grade. I have gotten mid grade pricing before but that was for smaller, older boards, that clearly didn't have as much on them as the bigger an newer types.
