Trailer Jack

Thanks to Sledge posting some upgrades I got motivated to fix a problem I have been having. Trailer Jack that came with the trailer was all bent due to it hanging below the frame of the tongue and it would drag/catch sometimes when going in a driveway or thru a dip in the road. Finally got pissed one day and took it off and threw it in the shred pile. Since then I had been using my floor jack but it needed some shoring to get it up high enough and was a pita.

Got another one in a pick up not long ago so today I cut some 4" pieces of pipe and mounted it so when retracted it was tucked up inside the frame. Everything used was from pick ups so my frugal a$$ is happy.

Good on my man. I had to replace mine about 3 months ago, I went to put the empty down on the trailer to go snatch a car one day and realize it seemed frozen, had all I could do to get it down and up snug to tow- when I returned- with a car on it- it was physically impossible to spin up. Had to get my floor jack out to get it unhooked from the truck. It is always nice that when you have to outlay some cash to fix something on your trailer- that at least we all get SOMETHING back in return when it goes to the yard in the shred pile.

I DIG the idea that you have it set so that when retracted- it is up inside the tongue. Nicely done!!!

Not really wanting to be negative, KZ, but that is some FUGLY welding holding that ball hitch to your trailer!!!! Around here they call that "seagull shzt".

It looks like it has held for a long time, but your guardian angel might heave a sigh of relief if you punched a couple-4 holes through the hitch and trailer frame and stuffed in some 1/2" bolts.

You did a fine job on the trailer jack. Great idea!

I've saved many jacks from junk piles, most of the time the culprit is the inner tube, part that extends down, gets turned and it sticks. Stick em in the vise and give em a turn and good as new. I often take them apart and grease em up and good as new.

I agree Jon...PO's work but I'm not sure I could do much better. It's mine now though and I should take your advice and beef it up.

cool, compliments turned to negs now, see if I can find one ; ) that must be one long winded rascal when going up or down. haha

I did bolts and welds on mine Kz, with a good 3/8 or 1/2 bit it don't take long to get through em. Got some extra tempered bolts from Tractor Supply (I believe they were 5 point, might of been 7) along with some lock nuts to make em stay put

It would be if it wasn't for that base that slips on the bottom and gets it much closer to the ground. Hopefully I don't forget about it and hit a dip with it on there or lose it.

gotta hand it to ya, Kz, that riser setup is a great idea. Might try that myself, I think a couple inches would get mine out of the danger zone

I'd have to buy bolts for it, and definitely want one of those riser pads to go with it too (mines long winded enough as it is ; )

Aren't you the one that does the large AC units now and then? That's a good source for bolts and such, the crates them things come in are very well built, and if you're around when they're uncrating it grab them bolts ; ) I really miss the source of bolts and screws I had on big commercial projects. About out of everything now, and have to go buy it

Yes, I do get A/C units on occasion but with winter here they may dry up for now. I don't save as much of the smaller hardware as I could but do stash the larger nuts and bolts...had a nice stash of the better grade bolts but the kid got into them this summer and put them to good use on his truck.

Go to Harbor Freight and get you a welder! Get your Dad to put you a 220 plug in that "shop" and get you some weldin gloves and go to weldin ; )
I got a nice lil 220V welder there on sale for $80 (that's been a few years ago, but still it wasn't bad) Just get the max size rod it recommends (don't try to overload it, if you need a thicker weld either go slower or make two passes)
By the time you've got the welding done that you already need, it'll have already paid for itself : D
