Planted a seed

To day was a stress day , The fuel pump went and the only way to get the part was to bike to it , I was ready but not looking forward to it
12 miles down a busy road and then back up . This was life threating but I was ready. First I rode over to a gas station to see if I could hitch a ride Via a pick up truck .
I found a person who would do me the favor he was originally from Tennessee and a nice guy.
As we drove we talked ,he is on SSD and a small pension he was 58 money is tight & he is very board cause he has no job
I figured what the heck I told him your pick up could hold 1000 with no real harm to it
& scrapping might be the answer to your money situation a hundred a week profit is doable I told him the things to sell
I said as you drive places pick up items . Since he was a tec for a local cable company I have a feeling he'll make a few bucks .
He was so interested he took me back up the hill . I gave him some wire as a sample - a vac motor - a fan - some light metal - short steel -and a VCR so he can get the feeling of what to look for. I clued him into the many things you can sell as metal like baby strollers. Car seats ECT.

He looked so happy and said thank you . I told him thanks as you never know I might have been killed on that bike ride . I feel he will not steal from me , some times when some one helps you ,ya just gotta take a chance to help back.
Well I guess a little more competition on the road .

New fuel pump $237 - installed easy. could of went used but figured i don't want to remove the fuel tank in 5 months as any used pump was 10 years old.

Wow. That seems high for a fuel pump. I think I got one last year for about $40. I could be wrong. I don't remember exactly what it cost, but I would have remembered that price tag.

Edit! I am thinking of a fuel filter. That was my price for that. I have not bought a fuel pump in along time.

Kudos to you for doing everything it takes to get back on the road as well as spreading the knowledge.

Hubby just paid $150.00 for one.

Copper, you did a good thing for the safe ride.

That was a pretty nice thing to do. Im sure he was very greatful for the usefull info you gave him.

Fuel pump for a chevy truck up here is over 300 bucks. 200 something is a decent price.

I could of went $29 for a You pull it yard , $125 used and another place was $75 used . $237 was with tax .
Auto shops wanted from $600 to $800 WOW !! It's a blind type item that at first seems intimidating to-do but really easer then I thought once I got to it .
The fuel tank has to be taken off . but goes easy
These pumps are all in one ,that the fuel filter is built in .I have owned cars that were 30 years old with original pump . I feel many autos theses days the pumps wont last that long .

My question is WHY does it seem the fuel pumps die right after you fill the tank?

Just once it would be nice to drop an empty tank

That ride may have been more of a blessing than having to peddle your old ass that far. LOL. If you and him keep in touch and he is just as honest and willing to learn something new, you may have found not only a friend but and older honest one. It never hurts to have a friend and an old helper, especially when you have dopers watching you.
Think about it.
By the way. I am almost 60 and still ride my 1986 TREK 18 speed road bike. ;)

My mechanic always told me to keep plenty of gas in my vehicle because the pumps get hot and the gas keeps them cool. If you have the habit of running on empty all the time then the pump will die an early death.

Copper Head,
This is kind a like the pay it forward thing and I commend you for what you did. You made a new friend and perhaps a contact that you will benefit from in the future. There's been time where people have helped me out of kindness when I was in a pinch. Many times I offered to pay for there time/efforts etc. and was told no. One guy specifically told me after he gave me a couple gallons of gas was that would not accept payment but all he wanted was for me to help someone else out in the future, that was his payment. This was over 20 years ago and I've helped people since then and tell them exactly the same thing if they offer to pay me for my time. 5, 10 or 30 minutes of kindness given can make most peoples day. Just think of how the world could be if more of us would do this.
So I'm going to challenge every SMF member and visitor that reads this post to do the same. Take the time to do something for some one, share the message and see what comes back, you'll be amazed. Lets see if we all can plant more of Copper Heads "Seeds of Kindness"

that makes total sense , never thought about it. & now that I took one out - for sure that stile of pump is siting in the tank & a definite benefit with a full tank
