What to pay..?

First off, Id like to say, I know there are countless threads about what to pay for computers, BUT, being from canada, and in an area where I have yet to find a GOOD e waste buyer, Im not so sure that paying $4-5 per tower would be worth it. I just got an email, someone has 30 towers and 4 Laptops. I was thinking $4 each for the towers, and $3 Each for the laptops. $132 total. Hoping someone from my neck of the woods can chime in and let me know what you think. This would be my first load of e-waste so i'm very green.

Lol, well im trying to ask a serious question here and looking for a bit of advice from the members who do primarily e waste. Im on here every day, I read the forum, alot. Im not new. Im asking for a hand gathering info that pertains to my geographical location. Not sure if you knew this, but its different everywhere! ok sarcasm aside, if you really think about it, shipping from outside the US, once duty and fees are paid, leaves next to no profit. Id make more selling to the yards here who pay peanuts.

There has to be a few ewaste buyers up across the border, We have members up there doing ewaste so they have to have some buyers.
I'd be PMing a few of them and picking their brains.

Mailing Gifts and Purchases from Abroad

Gifts mailed from abroad to people in the United States can be received by them free of duty if the value of the gift does not exceed $100. Gifts for more than one person can be consolidated into one package. To be eligible for this waiver, each recipient's name must be clearly marked on the package. Non-gift purchases mailed to the United States will pass duty-free if their value does not exceed $200. The outer wrapping must be marked with the fair retail value of the contents; a description of the contents (e.g., shirts, belts, watch, figurines, etc.); and whether the package is a gift ($100 exemption) or for personal use ($200 exemption).

While granted, ebay is not the end all authority on shipping, I think that is right. So it appears you really only have to pay shipping. If we went with a MB being 1 pound. 40 MBs are around 40-50 pounds, and at ewasted current prices 130-160. Maybe 2 pounds of memory 25.00, maybe 10.00 in processors (if they are p4). You are just under 200.00 for the 40 computers. If you paid 50.00 in shipping you are still clearing 150.00, but I bet you could do better than 1.00 a pound in shipping costs. If each shell weight 15 pounds, that would be 600 pounds of steel (60.00 here).

After shipping you are at 210.00 without counting the misc like heat sinks.

I personally don't see how you aren't going to make money, maybe you would like to make more, but I think there is some profit.

We have people here that live in places like Alaska that also have difficulty shipping things like MBs. You may be put in a position where you only ship processors, memory and other high dollar items while selling the rest locally, you simply adjust what you are willing to pay.

Just out of curiosity, what is the hang up with just driving the 5 hours to ewasted?

Too many issues with the border. Highly doubt the border guards would be too keen on me crossing with hundreds of computer boards and parts in the bed of my truck... Might freak em out LOL

Also my brother is constantly buying things from the US on ebay. Every time it shows up at our door, hes had to pay duty and/or customs fees.

Recently the USD has been worth about 92-95 cents CDN. But after checking just now, looks like its just above par. If it dips down again though, id be gettin less once its converted into CAD. May not seem like alot, but with increased shipping costs, it starts to get a little tight.

In the end, id really like to keep it local, or atleast in the same country. but If anyone can confirm that they have infact crossed the border with hundreds of pounds of e scrap, id consider makin the 5 hour trip. Would be a nice road trip and i could probably use the gas from a scrap car. Just that dang border. I dont wanna drive 3 hours to find out i cant cross.

When I hauled RV's up to Canada we used to use a broker at the border to do our paperwork on the new units.
Never once had a hassle at the border, just took some time waiting on my paperwork. Once I had the papers the inspectors would usher me right on thru. Don't know if it's the same coming the other direction.

Yeah I dont know how it would work. For right now, it would be too much of a hassle for me. Im one guy workin out of my garage so i dont have the volume to start fudgin with paperwork and border crap.

One of our buyer/members is Ewasted and you could pm him to see if he can assist you or give you some direction. I am assuming he does some business with folks in Canada.

Also if you are the only one buying ewaste in your area consider keeping your prices low. It can take a large amount to make shipping profitable depending on where your are. Mike
