I just cut open my first compressor only to find the majority of the windings were aluminum. Is there any way to tell if the windings are copper or aluminum before cutting open the casing?

Someone once said long, long ago in another posting that you might check the serial tag, alum will have an A and copper will have a C in the # somewhere.Quote:

The outer sheeting of the coil is copper colored even if it is aluminum so that wont work. Googled it and didnt come up with an answer, do yall cut all of them open and only scrap the copper ones?

A lot of the G.E. and Carlyle compressors are aluminum windings. But you can't go by letters in the model number as most Bristol and Techumseh have copper windings and an A in the model number. As a rule, the older the compressor, the more likely that it will be aluminum windings. As a compressor buyer, you start building a database of aluminum wound compressors pretty quick of go broke.
