CRT disposal really needs a better ''end outlet''

Goodwill takes monitors but not tv's for recycling. ok, thats good. I guess it has to do with recycling product they put out in the market to help keep old monitors from landfills.

Now, my local GW's have signs on the doors that they no longer take tvs - just saw this after dropping off a load of monitors the other day.

Who knows where any they didn't sell that had been donated ended up.

My thoughts are - if GW can recycle old monitors why can't some other company recycle old tv tubes on a larger scale or even GW itself? They are all the same thing basically, whats the difference between a monitor tube and a tv tube - nothing right?

Is it just because of cost?

I just think if GW can (I'm assuming) make money off off recycling monitors, can't Dell also recycle old tv's as well?


So this basically comes down to cost of recycling them? I watched a video someone linked to here about how they recycle them and never knew there was metal/whatever inside the tubes that could be reused afterwards.

Is the glass also reusable or is the glass thrown away at the end of the day along with the ''bad'' stuff they recover from these?

It's my guess that if truth be known, there is a government (that's right, using our tax dollars) subsidy involved. I would also venture to believe it's going to be paid whether they are accepting TVs or not (much as the farm subsidies pay farmers not to grow, and even gaurantee them a profit on crops that didn't yield as much as they'd hoped for, also using our tax dollars)

Not all GW's participate in the recycle program...Mine don't. An they will rudely inform you of the fact.

But..someone get on the ball an make a solution to the tube disposal..someone besides Goodwill. Please..anyone..

^^do you recycle them fully? or just dispose of the carcass once gutted?

Honestly, I don't think any companies are jumping at the bit to do this because I would imagine it would cost a lot to get the machinery set up/programmed, and I also imagine in a few short years there will not be anymore CRT's to use the fancy machinery on.

Sounds like a money pit.

Best Buy takes crt monitors and tv's under a certain size (think it's like 28"). I called my local Best Buy to verify that they did in fact take them and let them know I had 7 or 8 monitors I wanted to drop off. The guy was cool as hell and said while you really are supposed to only drop off three displays a day max, feel free to drop off all seven. I was informed to just put them in a shopping cart and leave them up near the rest of the carts.

Just an FYI if you guys are looking for some place to dispose of them.

Denver GW's quit taking tv's last November but still take monitors. Dell is just trying to comply with the feds requiring companies like them to recycle a certain percentage of what they put out there. The percentage being counted needs to be computer related I'm guessing.

Right, BUT where they gutted? I have yet to know of anyone who takes them gutted. That is why I donate all mine.

I have always wondered if it would be feasible to use ground up CRT glass as an aggregate in asphalt or concrete......

Their are special hazardous waste dumps that take tubes.

Now we know why there are so many being donated at the curbs. Thrift store near me doesn't take old TV's anymore. It's actually a good thing for us as long as we can have a steady place to take them after we gut them.

If the lead is fused into the glass, which is then solidly locked into concrete, how would the lead pose any risk?

Not talking about building schools out of the stuff....was more thinking of infrastructure like interstate highways and bridge supports.

I don't want to simplify ,first the metal inside adds up , I have seen at my yard large square bundles about as big as a crushed car .

As to the lead glass to bad the nuke industry can't use it as part of a cement mix when they encase spent waste . crushed glass is sand and residual lead is a good shield from radiation then the whole package gets tucked away in the Nevada's for time immortal

if the residual lead in the glass has properties in a capacity to minimize radiation if used as a recreated product, then the CRT glass has value .Our ozone is getting weaker more radiation from the sun is getting to us .

This lead glass has to have some use

Nah, they weren't. I'm too lazy to strip them down. :D

And really no one looks if you bring it in with the cover screwed back on. I gut them when I get them...I dont go out of my way but if it is there....and then put the cover back on a 4 screws...all done. Never had someone even look twice.

I think this is maybe the answer to why Goodwill is only taking monitors now. Because of the lead, theres no lead in CRT Monitors, but there is alot in CRT Tvs
