I want something for loading cars and trucks on to a trailer, I was thinking a 3000lbs as I don't deal a lot with vehicles yet but I want to get more involved in them, basically want a general purpose winch for a good price. any suggestions?

3000 is WAY underpowered for cars. Think rolling resistance and dragging with flat (or no) tires. And pulling up a ramp or up a tilt bed.
I'd say AT LEAST 8000. 10000 would be good and 12000 will handle about any car/truck.
I use a harbor freight Badlands 9000K. Find a magazine with their coupons in it and you can get it for 299.99. Pay the extra $30-40 for the one year or two year protection plan. Best value in winching.
I got the 12K Badlands recently for $299 on sale. Seems like about every other month it is on sale or use the 20% off like said above^^.
Offroad Winch - 12,000 lb. Offroad Winch w/ Automatic Brake
I get their emails frequently, guess I'll try and pick one up when I have the money
And spend the money (25$) for wireless remote. 9000k winch will be plenty, but if you got the change go for the 12k ! Ive used a 9000k hf winch for several years without a bit of problems, I would highly recommend it
hek, if you've got the cable for it, get yourself a good snatch block. It'll double your pull(although cut in half the speed) basically making a 6K into a 12. Also, instead of having only a straight pull, and depending on where you anchor the dead end, it'll allow for pulling at all kinds of different angles ; )
