hey guys, i have looked around on the threads. i dont think its ever been asked. does anybody know if there is rebar or wire mesh in concrete culverts ?. its been pretty slim pickings around me and theres a surplus of dumped concrete culverts. I love swinging my sledgehammer and being outside. gotta keep busy lol
i dont know for sure since i have never scrapped one, but i would say there is because they are load bearing / engineered

Yes, There is steel re-bar or formed mesh in most, but not all concrete culverts.
One good smack with a sledge will tell you.
I think it would only amount to pennies per hour though
it would lead to nothing you need 100 lbs to get $7.75 -$9 depending on where you are going (shred i am assuming for mesh not rebar) thats alot of smacks for no ####
I stopped at a lady's house once who had some freebie stuff out to the road, she invited me back to the backyard to start pulling more stuff, she said "Here.. Look at this pipe, it has metal in it" It was a concrete pipe with re-rod in it. I hit it with a 10 lb sledge and cracked it, I hit it again and finally busted a few pieces off it. I said "I appreciate it but that thing is no where near the work to get the ..35 cents out of it!
I too love swinging a sledge, amazing workout. Around here gravel is expensive and I crush up old foundations for gravel for my driveway and stuff. I don't think it would be worth the effort for strait scrap metal. However you could contact a gravel/rock company and ask what they do with the rebarb. All old feed bunks, walls and concreate is ground up around here. I have seen large piles of rebarb sitting next to the crushed concrete.
A word of caution--some of the smaller pipe that looks like concrete can be the old "asbestos cement" pipe. I've never seen rebar in that pipe since the asbestos fibers were the reinforcement. That kind of pipe is guaranteed to be leverite...leave 'er right where she lays!!

I know this has been answered above, but we have a factory here that makes it and it has the 4x4 wire inside them.

I'm generally not one to speak poorly of how a man makes his money, but I really can't imagine a less efficient way to make a dollar.
Depending on size, maybe you could re-purpose those as a raised flower bed, or as a fire pit, or something like that. Re-sell them as whole units. Even if you sell them for a couple of dollars apiece, I'd bet you would come out WAY ahead of trying to break them down for pennies worth of shred metal.
I see quarry operations busting up concrete pipe and other reinforced concrete. While they do save the rebar, it's just a byproduct. What they're really after is the concrete. It must be worth a bit, given the amount of time and machinery invested in the effort.

im still gonna scrap them guys lol . ill get to them this summer. Metal is metal and working isn't easy.
