Caution when buying certain servers and dedicated computer systems.

Don't know if I covered this before or not.

due to the drop in price of gold and since the last hold out buyer has had to reduce the price of "small" socket boards. Many servers dedicated to specific use (particularly IBM)
use small 2 socket mother boards in their servers and often contain less ram then other servers. IBM is known for high prices but also known not to over do their servers. (they do more with less, in some cases , a lot less). know what your doing when buying servers for scrap.

Also if you have an opportunity to buy military grade servers they contain a Faraday cage impregnated with lead that weighs about 20 to 40 lbs on its own.

when buying dedicated computer systems, like those found in hospitals found on the portable systems they push around the hospital or those found on specific purpose equipment be aware they too contain only what is necessary to preform the function they are designed for. Dell is big in this with their mini towers. I have found the scrap value to be in the range of $8/$10 so I price them at about $3 ea. depending on the Quantity.

Speak of the devil... I brought this in yesterday with a load, and just got to it. Generic server.

Good info. A server does not always command a higher price tag. I have been pretty lucky so far, but very good information to have.

I was about to follow up that picture saying that at least the front of that case ended up being 10lbs of cast aluminum, but the next one I got into more than made up for that beast of a case. 4 CPUs...wish the thing was in better condition so i could have started it up. This was a monster of a server back in the day.

yep indeed I still never pay more than $5 for a server unless its something newer than can be sold for more than $100 by itself now I would love to get a lot with pros in them and with the prices down I buy a lot more servers at auction than towers since the better rate of return dells are the best for me since I can sell the sinks alone for $10-20 but would love a lot of older ones though lol

the 2 loaded pentium pro expansion cards would bring $150 each at resale, nice score

Yeah, I really wish I could sell those. This server was really trashed, and had been outside through several storms. Nothing worked on it. You can see the mineral deposits on the gold fingers on the card on the left. It was sad that I had to scrap it.
