I keep reading on here that folks break down the tubes and give them to GW. they can't do anything with them can they? except throw them in the trash? my goodwill said they wont take them if everything has been removed.

I see this as costing them money. Even if someone has a per lb contract with them. Somewhere done the line it will cost goodwill money and ultimately raise the already high prices at goodwill.
According to the guy at my Goodwill, they get paid so much per pound for them through the Dell Reconnect program. I do know they're happy to get them each time I take them in and they couldn't care less if they're stripped. The only rules they have is they won't take bare tubes and they won't take console (wood) TV's. Everything else is good.
Ok but, how are they any good stripped?
I asked him that and he said they get recyled "down the line". I know the plastic can be recycled, but I'm not sure what they do with the tubes or even where they end up. I'm just happy they take them. With mine they get the added bonus of the board after I take off the good stuff off as I have absolutley no place around here that will take the boards, even as shred.
on the website it said they take bare tubes, just wrap in plastic and put in a box marked "glass crt tube". My guess is they're getting a gov't(taxpayer funded of course) subsidy to recycle them.
Thanks Bear, that'll help out when I run across console TV's. So far I've been turning them down.
One on the other end of town is on the dell list, but they claim they only take working ones with original remote controls to them.
But that is when I called the second time. The first time, they said yes, just put it in a box or bag and mark it as recycle.
Go figure.
I dont know about the glass, but the plastic they do profit from.
My local GW is paid $2 per by Dell regardless of condition. They will put working units in the store that may or may not sell but the ones that I drop off are a sure thing every time. I call ahead and tell them how many I am bringing and a guy meets me at the drop door with pallets. We skid them up and he puts them right on the truck. Everyone goes home happy!
Denver Metro Goodwill's stopped taking TV's last November but they still take computer monitors due to the Dell partnership. I think Dell takes them to show they are recycling a certain percentage of what they sell new and as the government get's more and more involved with everything, manufacturers are going to have to take responsibility for where their product goes when it becomes useless.
There's already a law to that effect. GW's agreement with Dell is simply in order for the manufacturers to comply with the law. The federal government has taken CRTs off the list of hazardous materials. This was an attempt to get all the CRTs disposed of that had been stockpiled due to difficulty complying with the HAZMAT law re: transporting HAZMAT.Quote:
