Freon Recovery

Is anyone out there recovering freon?

I got my EPA cert but it doesn't really give you proper instructions for ACTUALLY recovering. Just the do's and dont's of handling the refrigerant.

I've even wasted my money on some stupid e-book that told me just about nothing.

Can anyone suggest a GOOD source or doing freon recovery? And keep in mind I only really want it for freezers and refrigerators.

I have all the tools, vacuum, hoses, gauges and tap valve.

I was taping into the service port but today when I thought I had everything recovered there appeared to be more on the high side that didn't get sucked out :(

Imaging my surprise and dismay.

Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to do the right thing - and make some extra money doing it. ;)

How hard is it? I'm starting to get antsy about dropping 1 cuppa some CFC into the ozonelayer for every $7 I make..

What kind of recovery unit are you using? What were you evacuating that had a service port? The only refrigerators and freezers that have service ports are the old, old GE products. When I evacuate refrigerators I put a quick tap on either the suction line or access tube. On recip compressors if you tap only the low side, the refrigerant in the high side has to equalize through the cap tube as the compressor has one way valves in it (the reed valves). After you draw the system down to about a 10 inch vaccum you need to hit the compressor hard with a hammer as a lot of the refrigerant is under the oil in the compressor. I do 2 at a time so my routine is to hook up the lines, evacuate for about 10 minutes, smack the compressors and continue evacuating for another 5 or 10 minutes. One other thing. A lot of newer stuff you run into will have failed do to a plugged cap tube. You will find it mostly in static coil freezers, but I'm starting to see it more in refrigerators too. Anything that uses 134A can have the problem.

I have a feeling from his post he doesn't have a recovery machine and is just trying to use a vacuum pump (this would certainly explain why he is not getting all the refrigerant out).
