Okay so I have a question about stainless steel vs aluminum, I was scrapping a small drawer dishwasher and I found alot of stainless steel pieces around it, some was magnetic and some wasn't but I know it was all stainless steel, can someone please tell me the difference and how the prices vary. The stainless will throw off sparks if you hit it with a grinder where aluminum will not. Hope this helps.
If a magnet sticks most yards will consider it shred but ask to make sure.

Yup, at the yard Iuse if a magnet sticks it goes in the shred at about .10# if the magnet does not stick it is what I call true stainless and goes for .50#.
Devin, just to clarify. Is your question: what's the difference between aluminum and stainless or what is the difference in variations of stainless?
There is another grade of stainless steel, it is called 17-ph
This type of stainless steel is magnetic.
I brought some to the yard and the guys tells me it is not stainless steel because it is magnetic.
So once again I bite the bullet and get paid for iron instead of stainless steel.
All part of being a new bride in the scrap business.
All the yards I use do this also, so it's not that unusual.Quote:

despite knowing well that theres many other expensive types of stainless steels & other alloys which are magnetic
