Has anyone else come across these? They were removed from the bottom of a CPU Heat sink. I did run them across a grinder and there is a thin coating of what I believe is nickel but the core is copper. Does anyone know if this is correct and what grade they should fall under?

Are they magnetic? Ni is. I believe they are just tinned Cu. Some will have some indium solder on the bottom.

Very interesting. They do seem to have a slight stick to them when touching a magnet. I didn't initially detect it while it was still in the heat sink. Does this mean that it is nickel? also, any idea what category of copper this should be in? I was told to throw them in with my copper /aluminum fin heat sinks for the same price but I'm not sure if this is correct.
coated copper is #2. many heat sinks that appear to be alu but, seem too heavy are coated copper.
I had noticed that a while back and now we are separating the ones that have the copper base with aluminum fins from the straight aluminum heat sinks. I'm still trying to find an easy way to remove the aluminum fins though. Sometimes you can break them off but it is very time consuming.Quote:

I clamp mine down and go at it with a chisel and hammer. A couple of good hits usually is enough.
Gwotto, use a grinder or a file and take some of the finish off to see what the base metal is. If it's copper it will be #2.
