Tried to take a couple small radiators in with my load of insulated and the scale man told me you have to have a contractors license or be a certified HVAC to bring these in? Is this a state law? If not I'm moving onto a different yard.

Dismantle the darn thing and make your money that way.
Alot of yards are not even taking clean al/cu fin without paperwork anymore. And im sitting on about 200 pounds of it. I might have to cut the copper tubing out of it and sell it to 2 separate yards. I dont know yet, still waiting for copper to hit $4 before selling.
Try the neighboring state but somebody will take them. I live in ny but I take my radiators and copper to ct.
One more thing, I'm sitting on about 120lbs of copper. If you think copper will go up, I will hold to about a 1000lbs
Getting certified isnt that dificult, I was certified thru my former employer and it only cost like $40 but that was several years ago. If I remember it was an online test and you could have any referance material you needed at hand. Now having the equipment to properly recover and handle the refrigerant is another story. You will need recovery bottles for each type of refrigerant that you will be recovering. There are several other threads on here about it.
I can make it to 4 different state in less than an hour so its not gonna be a problem if i have to sell them. I have a copper hoard i am hanging on to.Quote:

Yeap, I have to fill out paperwork s on fridges. I really don't for fridges that much. They are a bulky pain in the ass and issue with freon is annoying. Unless its a heavy beast like the one I have now, I don't bother.
Georgia law is vague and interpreted differently by each yard it seems. It all depends on what level of risk they are willing to take. My understanding is that you can take in small rads such as those from window units without paperwork. I've taken in small dehumidifier rads to one yard and they took them without blinking an eye. Another yard hemmed and hawed and finally said they wont take them. Even the yards are confused about what is legal and what isnt. You can try to educate them, but that might be more hassle than driving down the road to another place.Quote:

I think it is a sign of things to come. I would like to see a seminar at the SMF convention (when we have one) to get everyone up to speed. It wouldn't be that hard to set up a one day seminar to teach everyone how to do the evacuations and get them through the online certification. The cost wouldn't be that much and I'm sure it would increase participation in the convention!

I found out about this on my first trip to the scrap yard. I had a load of scrap I was taking in, and I called ahead for prices. I asked the guy how much for the compressor out of an AC unit. He asked if I had broken it down yet and I said no. He said because of the new laws that had been passed he could only take it whole. Long story short, I got hosed which is exactly why I joined this forum. I talked to an HVAC friend of mine and he said he would have gone in with me if I had just asked him. The whole unit weighed 181 pounds, and I got shred price for it.
Edited to add: If my HVAC friend had gone in with me, I could have taken it in broken down.
I guess things are not always peachy in Georgia.
Not always, but for the most part, especially when it comes to finding scrap :) It's everywhere.
