Question about material
Hi folks, couldn't find the answer to this on the forum, please forgive me if it has been addressed elsewhere. Tore down an older Dell laptop, and there is a large cast metal looking gray piece of metal, thin and very light, looks sort of like cast aluminum, basically . But there is a symbol inside that consists of the letters "Mg" surrounded by the universal recycling arrows. I know Mg is the chemical symbol for magnesium, but would that be used in

The last time I took some of that metal to my yard I showed it to them and they said I put it in with the Al. I suggest you do the same and if they say put it in the shred I would take it home. You have to decide what works best for you. I have found that in the end its up to your yard what is classified as what. Best of luck, Mike.

Magnesium is common in laptops, as it is lighter than Aluminum. My yard allows me to mix it with Aluminum as long as there is not a lot of it. It is used in a bunch of different Aluminum alloys. One thing to understand is that it is extremely flammable, and difficult to extinguish once it ignites. Large chunks/pieces are difficult to ignite, but grindings/small broken pieces are more likely to start a fire.

You may want to research places that specifically recycle electronics in your area. We service the Phoenix area but there are different places all over. Some places might even pay you for your old electronics. A lot of times they can re use those kind of parts. Hope that helped!
