I went thrift store hunting today and picked these up. There is very little on these things that are magnetic.

Any ideas on resale or scrap value, or should I chalk this up to my education costs? :)
It looks like you might have done ok on the 2nd one. Two larger sized transformers and 2 ceramic eproms, and it looks like those are gold windows.
Are you reselling them or scraping? If you are scraping then I feel you over paid greatly. I might pay $0.05lb for electronics with transformers like those. The Al has to be cleaned before it can be sold for a good price. I guess it depends on how much work you want to do in breaking down scrap. I am a very cheap worker and enjoy breaking things down.
No matter what you do you will be getting a valuable lesson in breaking down scrap. Best of luck Mike.
I got a few units in a "lot" at an auction. Listed on Ebay, had some watchers but no buyers. Tore them down and shipped the boards with other Ewaste but can't remember what I got for them.
It looks like you bought those boxes for about .20 a pound. If you strip the transformers and pull EVERYTHING of value off, I think you will do ok. It will probably depend on what grade the boards are. I agree though, I would have bought those at shred price, that way everything I pull off is money in my pocket.
i agree, id pay shred on that type of scrap, 10 cents pound. Clean the boards that are green on both sides and you can sell them as midgrade.
I appreciate everyone's input. Searches on Google and Ebay proved fruitless. I expected to scrap these, and really didn't expect to make much profit. I was really curious as to what could be in equipment this old. The brown topped one is from 1983 and the black topped one is from 1985. Since it seems that most agree that I could break even, I will call it a win for the knowledge base.
I will break them down soon and post my findings.

I usually pay about .50 ea for the Dish/Direct TV receivers, those boards usually go for mid-hi or low motherboard.

The first picture shows the power cord, a stainless bottom, two transformers, and some steel with low grade boards.
The second picture shows the rest of the boards, some aluminium, low grade wire with gold connectors, copper shielded coax, and gold window chips.

The first picture shows a large, heavy piece of stainless, some other stainless, one transformer, and some steel with low grade boards.
The second picture shows the power cord, some silver looking boards with a metal backing, low grade wire with gold connectors, the other boards, some aluminium, the stainless steel face plate, and brass standoffs.
I looked at all of the pictures. Very good break down. I did notice a couple things, the connectors/plugs still need to be cut off the wiring. Also there still looked to be some IC chips left on the low grade boards, i usually just get up underneath them with a flat blade screwdriver and pop them up. I think the caps will need to be removed from the midgrade boards in order to get midgrade price for them, but i have a picky buyer.
I saw some tantalum caps :)
I bought these receivers because they were old and I wanted to learn how to maximize scrap on older stuff in hopes that it would make scrapping new electronics easier. You actually answered two questions that I had without me asking. Thank you. I will be popping off the remaining IC chips soon, and I was wondering if the caps needed to be removed to make a board cleaner.Quote:
