CRT Monitor assay

The other day I got a bunch of CRT monitors so I decided to do a break down on them to see what they are really worth. I took 10 monitors mostly dell and hp and at least one samsung. There may have been other brands but I didn't really pay attention. They were all between 15 and 19 inch. So here is what I came up with.

Bare Bright copper 7 pounds 10 ounces @ $2.95 pound = $22.49
#2 copper 4 pounds 12 ounces @ $2.75 pound = $13.06
Extruded Alum. 5 pounds 11 ounces @ $.45 pound = $2.56
Sheet Alum. 1 pounds 2 ounces@ $.40 pound = $.45
Gold Connectors 12 ounces @ $2.00 pound = $1.50
Low yield wire 7 pounds 10 ounces @ $.30 pound = $2.29
Stainless 3.5 ounces @ $.45 pound = $.09
Steel 21 pounds @ $.07 pound = $1.47
IC's 8.5 ounces @ $5.00 pound = $2.66
Transformers 9 pounds 8 ounces @ $.25 pound = $2.38
Low grade board 14 pounds @ $.10 pound = $1.40

Total $50.35

So after all that it came to $5.00 a monitor which is what most people on here say they are worth. I figure with the time it took me I made about ten cents an hour. I did not figure in the plastic because I have no one to sell it to yet. As for the tubs they go to the land fill. Not the best solution but the only one I really have. on the up side I managed to keep about 70 pounds out of the landfill and made a few bucks.

I would only recommend doing monitors to get rid of the ones you have laying around or if you are really slow with nothing else to break down. None of this is breaking news but I thought I would share what I found. I am picking up a bunch of Imac's this week. I may do a break down on them sometime in the future.

Leave the Imacs they are worse then monitors. One of those pieces were u just gotta ask did you really need that many screws. Thanks for the breakdown, makes me glad i finally got the pile of CRTs all done with.

in my opinion the Imacs are worth it.........Around $8-$10 worth of scrap in them..........Once you do a couple you will get in a rythym and knock em out

Infortunately, there's no bare bright in a CRT monitor. It's all #2 copper. If your yard will take the degausing coil as bare bright that's awesome, but don't count on it.

By the way, believe it or not, it's actually one thin strand of wire looped around over and over again.

A lady standing behind me in line had her degausing wire in her number 1 bucket. She said the scale guy said it was cool. Of course she said that after my 25lbs of them went to the scale mixed w/ #2. uh

Either your math is off or you took a nap between monitors. It only takes me 5-10 mins a monitor (depending on how many cocktails I've had). I don't see how 10 monitors can take more than 2 hours = 25.00 an hour.

If I get a particularly stubborn monitor/TV, it may take me 10 minutes from the time I crack it open to the time I'm setting the carcass out by my garbage.

I take the back off, pull the board, take the little board off the tube, pull the yoke assembly off, snip the degaussing cable, snip off the braided wire that is up towards the front of the tube, pull any speakers that may be in there, then screw the backside on. Set it by the garbage cans. 5-10 minutes per, and I'm not trying to win any races with 'em.

It takes me about 20 min each but thats completely down to clean plastic that can be taken for recycling and the lowgrade board picked clean of valuables. 30 min each if I am drinking at the same time. Its still better than working a minimum wage job, $15 hr cash processing 3 monitors/tvs per hour, just saying.

I asked my yard. They said as long as it is striped and has no foreign matter on it they would call it BB. They do not care what size it is. I assume that is why you call it #2?

So you are saying you can tear apart a monitor, unscrew anything that is attached to the alum heat sinks, remove all the transformers, snip all the wires, remove the IC chips, remove all the wire from the cone in less than 12 minutes each?? I would need to see that. You must know some tips I do not.

Again see my reply above. I can get the stuff out in a couple of minutes but than you just have a pile of junk it is not separated to be sold. I would love to have someone time themselves from start to finish with the breakdown I gave. It would be interesting to know how much time it really takes. Now I have to get another monitor and time myself

to late. I already won the auction. spent about $2.25 per unit. I tore one I had already down before I bid on the auction and I came up with $8.25 per unit without the hard drive. Nothing around here comes with hard drives. So when it is all said and done I will profit about $750-800 for the load. Not great but more than I had yesterday.

I can be a little slow sometimes... You mean it took you 50 hours to break down each monitor? That's how I computed it (50 hours at $0.10 per hour = $5.00).

Basically, yeah. At my yard each wire or strand has to be as big as (or bigger) than a #2 pencil lead. For instance, #12 solid is #1 copper, while #12 stranded is #2. Ce la vie.

Ok just to clear up the confusion the $.10 and hour remark was a joke. I really don't know how long it took me but I am sure I can make more money on cpu's or other scrap. That's why I said ok if you have nothing else to do but not my first choice.

I hear this CRT time thing mentioned a lot on here. Sounds like a nice scrapper reality show competition to stay on the show for another day. Fastest gets immunity, slowest gets booted off. SMF Masters.

After 100 CRTs, they become pretty easy, and you become more efficient. It becomes second nature. When I know I will be going by Best Buy, I will do 3 the night before. I can get them completely broken down (everthing pulled off boards, wires cut, deguassing cable stripped, and tvs packed in the car) in less than an hour, and not even rushing.

I am still slower at computers, because I have not done nearly as many.
