Sorting it all out by type would be a good start, then i would start processing the stuff that should be processed like cdrom drives and floppys for boards/connectors. If you see any good resale items like 1gb or larger ram sticks or dual/quad core cpus or gaming video cards i would set it off to the side to resell at a later time.
I'd do some reading on breaking stuff down. All of your questions will be answered. Pick you a good buyer you can trust out of the buyers section and get ready to send boards to them. Or if you already have an Ebay account then just list the boards there.
maybe i'll try but i also will be getting about 500 destroyed hard drives. the company put a drill bit hole through the platters and board? Will it be worth it to disassemble the drives?
the boards have highest value per pound id pull those off then id sell the rest of it as dirty aluminum or ship it to a buyer. Id say its not going to be worth it to disassemble since the platters will have holes in them, the platters and the magnets have the most value and will readily sell, the motors and read/write heads will be harder to sell.
People buy the platters for scrap platinum recovery.
On platters the foil is nickel the base metal is aluminum. I dont see anyone making any money on platters. Best case sceneario there worth 90 cents per pound. I have seen people buying them at $2 per pound so i have no idea where the extra value is coming from. I think the platinum you are referring to is only 30nm thick layer which is basically nothing, like 10 cents worth per platter at most, providing it could be recovered in an economical way which it cant at that concentration.

I was bored and took apart 10 hard drives today. Not really worth doing any more than taking the boards out. After getting them to the point of clean aluminum I may make $0.15 more on them. Although now I got a lot of cool magnets. :)
Just take the boards off unless you want the magnets. They take too much time to take apart to make your time worth it.
I buy the bad units for 1.25/each and take apart about 20/hr which yields me about 3.50 after selling off all its parts. So for me its like making over $40/hr. Well worth it for me. But can't resell the platters for more than scrap value if they have drilled holes. So in that sense you are right take the board off and ditch the rest.Quote:

Get ahold of PartTimeScrapper. He helped me with my first load. He is a no BS guy and very honest. He can also get you a beter price than scrap on some items. I will be using him for any and all of my E-scrap.

Be careful when you open these up! there are a few hard drives with glass platters that explode inside when drilled. they are rare, but wear gloves. maybe shaking the drive before opening it can give you a hint.Quote:

You might want to get the escrap book that's on here by BigRyan. I got it and it's been a tremendous help getting started.
