Some mothernoard and hard drive questions with pics

Hello folks! I have been tearing into a few older computers and IBM desktops that i recently obtained and have a few questions. Thanks for any help or advice!

Probably a stupid question for some, but after opening a few up, I cannot find a generic looking cpu.

I got all excited when I saw 486 on this cpu, but it is soldered on and does not appear to have "gold legs". Would this board pay differently then other motherboards?

These look to be some pretty big hard drives. They seem to be in most of the older IBM's I have.

Looks like you got yourself an old 486 board. I dont think most of the buyers here pay any diferent for those boards. Also looks like 5.25 inch hard drives. If you like to tear them apart they usualy have like 3 to 5 platters in them.

That drive marked ST-225 mite be a fun and easy one to open up. That thing is an old MFM 20 Mb Seagate. MFM was one of the standards before IDE came out. It only has 2 platters in it and they are probably orange.

if you do ebay you might find better than scrap on those boards and drives there

I'll check into it, thanks Bear. How about the cpu in the first pic? All i see is a bunch of long cards that you can see going from left to right in the pic. They look like long video cards. Thats what the majority of these boards seem to have on them.

Or the processor might be a slot processor of some sort on a plug in card.

I believe that is what picture number 2 is :) here is wiki page on the i486 sx chip. Interesting read for the nerd in you.

Yes it is posible it there is processor on one of the cards. The main board does not look like any backplane I have seen. Looks more like an old XT/AT board.

ah yes you are correct I think. I bet it is an 8088 chip or the like then on the first picture.

sometimes you can tell from the outside connector if it's a video card or other, if it has outer connectors. Sometimes you can google numbers of the boards for info. Sometimes it's an extensive search process

That 486 chips is the processor, it's soldered on. The hard drive boards are nice off of those because they are so heavy. Those finger cards, if loaded with IC chips, can be sold as Telecom boards I know ....

Most of the time the IC's are ceramic, they will buy them as Telecom boards.

The 486 cpu needs to stay on the board or you will hurt the value. There are 2 good size socketed ic chips you can pull off it though.

Sometimes on those old boards the metal around the keyboard connector will be gold plated. If it is i always remove them.
