OOOhh.....shiny!!!

I just started tearing down some of my large pile of hard drives and decided to open one of the old large 5 pounders to see what was in them. There are three nice 5 inch? platters and a 7 ounce hard drive logic board. The good surprise was on the side of the reader. These pretties were on the thin ribbon cable there. They are about 1/2 inch long. I'm wondering if the leads going from them are solid gold wire? Anyone have any idea? Even if it's plated, they are sweet. The other two in the picture were from another drive. The third drive I broke down had regular plastic IC's in the same position. Now I have to tear down all the old ones to see if there are more hidden treasures!

What do y'all do with this stuff? I get a lot of it it from printers and cell phones, what do y'all sell it as? Nice gold plating by the way

Gravitar, there are several buyers in the Buyers and Sellers section found on the main page. The best thing to do is research what they buy and learn how to sort/grade what you have. Most anything with gold showing on it in electronics has a nice value to it. Several kinds of circuit boards or chips have gold that you can't see so research, research, RESEARCH.....then sell. I've sold to a few buyers on here and talked to a few more, all good experiences and nice folks.

Bear, maybe a 2 lb gold chip!! LOL doubtful.

I had one of those last year, disks about 16 or 18 inches across I think. Someone has one as his avitar pic. Mikeinreco I think. I don't remember finding anything gold in there, some heavy electric motor scrap though. I still have those great big disks on my wall.

Thanks for that. I've done all of the things in your post multiple times before. I've already known about gold and other metal like platinum, palladium, tantalum, etc etc in the board and there being gold and silver in IC chips on low grade boards for a long time. And I have known for a while about Ewasted and Easy Recycle. They don't state anywhere about GOLD PLATED RIBBON CABLE found in printers, Hard Drives, etc. I should have clarified better in my post what I was talking about because after I read it, it sounded like I was talking about the board.

Gravitar......Ok, I get it now. I've been trying to figure out the same thing. Someone's going to have to refine a batch of that gold ribbon and figure a turnout. When they know the gold content, they can fix a price. I've just been saving mine from as you said printers, cell phones, and the contacts on hard drive motors. I have seen a $30 per lb offer on the gold squares from sattelite dish cards. There could be a comparison there, but this ribbon is very thin and I think the gold to plastic ratio should be better if you trim it close. It could be even better than gold fingers trimmed. Someone who's refined some of this may let us know.

Nice drive ya got there Bear. I just love tearing into things to see what's inside. Yours could have some neodymium magnets in it, can't tell from the pic. I've got some large ones out of Seagates before, very strong. I think the biggest drives had electromagnets in them instead.

i think this was discussed on a post this wk, and it was stated that was an old price and the new one was 5$/lb. i could be wrong.

I posted some pics on another post of mine, PCMCIA Wireless cards, loaded with gold, didn't know it until the other day, my scrappers was like what should we be doing with these.. and I busted one of them open and SHINY GOLD both sides I'm like save these to the side and go git the rest of them that are in that box.. Great for collection.. and also.. On Laptop LCD screens the cable that goes from the inverter to the back of the Lcd screen the connection there is nicely laid with gold, I've over 20lbs of them cables. and the lcd boards, on the back of the screen at least 60 lbs worth...
