We have about 300 lbs. of copper from an old industrial welder. The copper is 1/4 inch by 1/4 inch ( square ) and has a clear shellac type coating on it. Would it be to our advantage, price wise to remove the coating before selling or will it really make no difference in the price. If removing the coating is recommended how should it be done. Thank You
The difference in price here would be .50 a lb if you don't take it off. 3.75 a lb if you do take it off. Definitely advantageous to remove it. Not sure of the best way to remove as I am not exactly sure what it looks like.
I'd suggest trying toilet bowl cleaner if it's really shellac or similar. Let it soak for a few minutes and wipe with a heavy cloth and/or rinse with a hose. Wear non-absorbent gloves. Wash off any cleaner you get on your skin. I've used this to turn #2 to "Bright and Shiny", but really wasn't worth the time and effort. In this case, it would be.
Are places really buying copper at $3.75 a pound? Where is this? I'm a little surprised seeing that is only 3.5% less than spot copper price. I only got $3.20 for copper 1 yesterday.Quote:
