dealinf with alu and stainless

never thought I would hear my self say this but. with prices where they are that is almost the case here. At least it seems like it.

with gas nearing all time highs again and alu nearing all time lows Im in a quandry as what to do, continue to hold or sell.

If the economy dosn't crash prices will go up. if it does crash then alu and copper will be a very good barter item because of their easy work ability.

I think every one is waiting for election results (not that I believe it will make a lick of difference) any thoughts ?

I have a decent size area to work with and storage for items I'm selling, but in order to stay organized for production I continue to move product to the yard. Prices have been better around here but by no means on the bad side right now. I try to look at it as the law of averages through out the year.

ya thats my delema too, yard is big enough but in s one man operation it is easy to get cluttered and dissorganised. I have a couple of ton of cast, die cast and sheet probably just have to grit my teeth and sell.

Yeah i'm a one man operation and to avoid getting overwhelmed I go to the yard at least a couple of times a week

cast & die cast? what's the difference?
what are heat sinks? just aluminium?

Die cast may also be zinc cast or pot metal at some yards and doesn't pay as well as alum cast...looks more grainy and is a darker gray. Heat sinks can go as alum clip or extruded as both pay about the same.

many yards are not yet familiar with comp scrap. heat sinks have been called every thing under the sun but what it is (extruded) here. from cast to MLC (medium light copper) cast alu contains a lot of zink and is much heavier then plain cast, and here pays about half of cast.

the yards here are taking advantage of the economy. we are a tourist trap, and wages here are something to behold. electricians , plumbers and welders $10 to 13 per hr. the hotels and restaurants control this whole area and the wages.

with the economy the way it is the yards can get away with paying cigerette and beer money for copper and alu because there are so many out of work.

one of the yards here screwed me out of 8 ton of dirty moters (auto) and # 1 steel unprepaired. I brokered a deal and they sent their trucks to pick it up and didn't pay me my cut. no searious scrapper here sells local we have to go north 60 miles to Alabama.

that ain't so bad, I hear the sky's are so blue in Alabama, it's winter here so looking fwd to some blue sky's in melbourne myself.
tradies charge like wounded bulls here, a plumber will charge $80 minimum call out, so to light your heater pilot light, 5 minutes, $80.
but generally think $35 hour is minimum for most things, even mowing lawns, heck, the gov't pays $240 a week just to stay in bed all day, have a kid you get $5000 soon as it pops out so it really does pay to stay in bed all day!

we've got a new tax here, a carbon tax, a guy at the transfer station told me that recycling has just gotten 30% more expensive
because of the new tax, so whilst the price of metal may remain the same on the market, processing it is higher so that would add to a lower scrap price?

the nany state system is great huh. but no worries we will all be there before long.

they finally figured out a way to tax the air you breath, and called it the carbon tax, think about it.

Carbon Tax will be here inside 4 years if we don't get rid of The Little o.
