Hello all,
Recently and in the past, I have sold heavy equipment counterweights as cast iron and got a low price compared to either cast prices or even shred. I am wondering if there is a way to process these safely and efficiently or is it something that should be sold as is to the yard and let them deal with it?

The reason pieces that are that thick are worth less money is they cannot be shipped to a shredder with typical sheet iron scrap. Those pieces need to be torched down which is a more expensive and time consuming process. I cannot think of a way that an individual would be able to process a counterweight into small enough pieces to get sheet iron price that would be worth their time.

Just a slight clarification, cast counterweights get broken up with a medicine-ball and a magnet, not torched. Most yards sit on big pieces of cast like that until winter here in Michigan, iron shatters easier when its cold and the prices are usually higher then also.
