Drought revealing a hidden gold mine?

Sorry, not real gold. =P Don't we all wish.

As most of us (here in the States, anyway) know, most of the US is under a drought. Never realized it could have much of a positive until I took a stroll by the lake in my apartment complex - the water level's dropped so much it's stranded tons of cans (and other misc non-metallic debris) on the rocks and spots near drains. Next day off I'm going to go muck about down there and see what I can find.
Since this is my apartment complex, I'm probably fine... but another complex, I'd ask the property manager, just to be safe. I'm guessing public parks are probably fair game. I'm avoiding other neighborhoods and anything that's close to someone's house or backyard. Don't want to scare someone or take something that's not mine, ya know? (Though wearing a generic safety vest might help to not make people uneasy seeing some random guy wandering around with a trashbag :p )
I'm going to try using Google Maps to look for other small bodies of water or streams around apartment complexes.

Anyone else taking advantage of the drought?

This is a good idea. Around where I live in the last few years the state has been draining some ponds and lakes to kill off all the non native fish and turning them into more of wetlands. Anyways in these ponds they have found cars and tractors and other stuff people have dumped or fell through the ice. I walk the parks around where I live and most have rivers or streams running through them. Last year we had alot of flooding and I found tons of stuff that was moved into the woods from the river. I live in a state that has a 5 cent return on cans and bottles and I made alot last year.

Also the vest is a good idea. I may just have to get one.

Had five loads of barge scrap come into the yard the other day. Apparently its been underwater for 15 years and the water is so low that it could be removed. Must have been a small barge because it might be 70 to 80 ton total. The Mississippi is so low right now I am sure there is tons of scrap just waiting to be found and turned in.

What drought? If I could scrap rainwater I'd be set for life... :-)

I lived on a lake growing up that is mostly dry right now...When gold was 300 an oz one of our neighbors lost a 25k ring out there...That makes it worth spending a lot of time metal detecting out there.

Omigosh I hadn't thought of this! There are a couple ponds by me I can look into!

Been finding some good stuff walking/wading a few creeks/rivers while fishing(A/C's,copper wire, Alum.Etc)!
We had a record flood last year. Last month I found a sterling silver cigar box that was in with all of the flood debris! It fetched me a quick $200 from a jewelry shop!
