How are you guys finding places to pick up escarp? I have a cl ad and freecycle ad but get zero response.
Sometimes it takes a while. Patience will pay off.
Are you advertising for escarp? Some folks may not know what that is. All snideness aside it does take time. Also cruise the free and computer sections of CL. I picked up a truck bed full Saturday for $50 bucks. It's out there, go find it.
My partner and i have a small computer repair shop. He is the tech part of our operation. I started doing the e-scrap thing because I seen a need for it in my area. I just pound the pavement every day in search of scrap. The main thing I have noted thus far is that the people in my area need to be able to believe that you are actually recycling the assets and not just harvesting the good stuff and dumping the bad. Play to peoples passion about recycling and be believable. Actually recycle the stuff and word will get out.
Renew your ads as often as they'll let you, my Freecycle is titled computers and appliances for recycling, as it's more local, the CL one is aimed primarily at computer equipment in my area, since it's posted in a large area. After maybe 2 months I've had one offer from FC, but not got the pickup call yet, and the CL gets hardly any bites at all, until last week, got an email saying their company was doing a clean-up and wondered if I'd pick up some large copiers and 5-10 computers plus other odd stuff, but they were over 100 miles away. I emailed several times with them that day but wasn't sure it would pay for itself or not, still decided to go, came home with a 4x10 trailer filled with 2 washing machine sized copiers, 9 towers, 4 CRT monitors, some smaller but heavy duty printers and fax machines, and 6 or 8 keyboards- one is an old IBM clicky key which alone will one day pay the $30 cost of gas for the trip. They even helped me load it :) A couple of the computers are vintage and might make some parts sales on Ebay, one tower was a P4 and one P3 1000 which I'll keep for at least a while, along with one or two of the monitors. I'll check out the P4 and maybe set it up for a local sale. Still haven't dug into the copiers to see what parts might be salvaged from them. There was a lot of plastic in that load though which I'll have to find a way to deal with. That one CL ad finally brought a call that will pay for any time and cost of the trip. I did forget to mention telecom and network equipment to them, which might have made the load a bit better, since they had just done a major cleanup.

The best thing you can do and have a leg up on 99% of your competition is to have a website that people can find. I gave up on craigslist a long time ago.
I have only paid for E-waste once, and it was less than $20.00. If you have facebook, use it. If not get it. I don't even have my own page. But every so often my wife will post something in her status about taking broken or unwanted electronic items. It never fails. Facebook, in my opinion, gets ALOT better response than CL.
