What would you do if you owned this company?

OK this is going to be a long one.

Employees are union and in the union contract it states that all employees decide if they want overtime or not. Each quarter they sign what is called the overtime desired list. You either sign up for no overtime, own work assignment overtime (this means if your assigned route for that days requires overtime you want to do it), 10 hour any list, and the 12 hour any list.

Now in the contract it states that before you can work someone on the no overtime list overtime off of there own assignment you must work the people on the 10 and 12 hour list a full 12 hours. If this doesnt happen the union files a greivance and gets the people on the no list paid an extra 50% hourly rate and the people on the 10 and 12 hour list get paid 150% hourly rate for not working.

So in a nutshell they are paying an extra 200% hourly rate for what is termed improper mandating.

Now you have a manager that believes he can do what ever they want to and break the contract and just keeps having to pay out the money.

Now here is the question. If you were the owner of this company and this manager was costing you upwards of $8000.00 per week in union greivances what would you do.

You just described the United States Postal Service. You DO own it. Ironic situation, isn't it, having no voice in how it's run and then pay for it's service/product?
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

The REALLY sad part is that nothing has changed in 30 years. I immediately recognized it from working as a Carrier in the 80s before I got my college degree and moved on. So many good people are sucked in by the money (wages) and can't get out.

The USPS should have cornered the email market back about 1982, but there was nobody in management with brains enough to see beyond the end of the current political administration.

Isn't the postal service one of those semi-private companies? Similar to Frani Mae and Fredi mac(sp?). If it is then we could refuse to up the postage rate and alow the postal service to go bankrupt thus making the labor contracts void. Other private companies have done it when the management made mistakes. The right to fail may need to be stipulated in our constitution.

This was disturbing to read how the postal service is being managed but not surprising. Mike

The higher ups are dumber than dumb crooked government officials. They don't earn the money so who cares if it's wasted.

My dad is a retired postal worker and my wife is a teacher for Jeffco but refuses to be in the union. I feel your pain PTS, we are glad she works where she works (Dad was too) and the benefits are good but it is sickening to see the waste that goes on. Pay cut this year and she pays much more for health care then those wussies in Wisconsin.
